Build #2: Fretless Headless 5

Just wanted to weigh-in and congratulate you first on being a new Father! That is the most beautiful thing you've made to date, but your bass is an oh-so-close second. As a fellow lefty, it is pleasing to my eye.... Although the acrylic finish is awesome, but being a natural finish kind of guy, I liked the pics of the bass just before you sent it off for spraying. I nice hand-rubbed finish with the burst colors would have looked sick in my opinion!

Listened to all of the sound clips, and in spite of not being a fan of EMG's, the bass sounds great. In one section of the most recent clip, their was the unmistakable Jaco tone coming through. I'm a big fan of flats, and am going to change my current TI Jazz Flats to the chromes soon. Looks like the bass hangs perfectly - the advantage of headless!

I'm curious; what is the final weight?

Because of it being mostly made up of solid cherry on the body, it is about 8-9 lbs. If I had to go back and do this one over, I could bring that weight down drastically, by chaimbering it. The "Jaco" sort of sound was indeed from the bridge pickup. I've also considered putting fatstack nordys in it, or a set of barts. I know barts will give it a way better fretless tone, than the EMG's.
But i'll let it ride for now, it's one of my gigging basses (Both basses I use have the same setup, 2 40 dc's and a BQC)

I agree that Barts' especially would bring out the "mwaaah" in your sound, but I admit to liking your latest sound file, as it shows that there is just enough "mwaaah" in there, but it still has the fretted electric sound as well, which is brought out by your precise fingering. In your case, I am reluctant to say that this is one instance where I like the sound of the EMG's, but I have a feeling the additional battery is helping them open up, especially on the low B.

It's interesting to imagine what it would have sounded chambered. Sounds like a another build to consider! ;)

Indeed, I thought of making a fretted sister to this one. I've always been big on gigging with both a fretted and fretless, so this one won't lose out on a gig position

I have to say that I agree with this statement. As sick as it looks right now, I think it looks a bit better with a matte* type of finish.

One thing that both us righties and you lefties have in common is that we both don't like instruments that we call upside down! :D

This one will get a fretted twin!!!! As soon as I get some customer work done........ I'm gonna try the headless hipshot stuff this time, and i found a much better top for it too....

this one will be a swamp ash core body, however I have much more wood (wenge, mahogany, ebony, cocobolo..etc) so i might sandwich up this one too. Big difference will be that this one will be a bolt on.
