How do you mean? You mean, across the grain? Coz we found the best effects we could get were with the grain. Otherwise you get a less consistent scorch and it looked very patchy.
Oh BTW, I brand my logo into every bass. Not just this one.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying, but in this case, the wood has actually been burned. It's not just paint sitting on top it. If you look at the pic below, you can see in the upper right where we tried to go across timber. It just wasn't consistent. The timber was quite heavily sanded afterwards and it still looks patchy.
I'm pleased to say, IT'S DONE! 
Werl, when I say "pleased" also mean sort of ashamed as it's taken so long. I guess part of the problem is we hit lots of hurdles (some totally unrelated to the project) along the way. However, it's altogether and Dave got his first go on it last night... Curiously, he told me, "the action is a bit too low". I laughed, coz I thought it could still go lower. 
Needless to say, he was pretty happy. There are a few electronics things still to play with and the dials will change, but it's a player and it's a good one. The P PU is super punchy and the neckbucker is full of low middy goodness. I'll let Dave supply us with some sound files when he's ready. In the meantime, here are some pics... excuse me if they're not as awesome as usual. Our camera is broken and it's 36degC outside, so I wasn't go out to take pics out there.

The neck has two of these amazing knots. They look so cool.

Man, congrats, that's looking fabutastic! Full of earthy goodness with all that wood grain showing. As much fun as it is to build them, it's just so completely gratifying to get to play them when they're finished. And your mate looks pretty stoked!
Had the chance to get out and see Dave's band in action last night.
Firstly, it needs to be said that these guys are slick operators and excellent musicians. Additionally Dave is one of those guys who can make lots of notes sound like simple, melodic grooves. And the guy is a freak. 8/
Secondly, it seemed like quite a few people had turned up to see the 'new bass'. And man, it was worth it. This thing doesn't sound like a P bass. It's punchier, gnarlier, bright and just plain cut right through the mix, even with old strings still on it from when we first set it up. Dave did a fair bit of slapping last night and it sounded more J than P to me, but just generally, it's a great sounding instrument. The other guys in the band are smitten with it too. So yeah, I'm pretty happy and it's exceeded expectation... and we still have some little adjustments that will make it better. :thumbup:
