Front of house mixing question

Presets are only good if what goes in the input is the same every time. And it rarely is; the instrument is different or the amp is different or the player is different. Sometimes all of those things come into play. Unless you can minimize the changes on all three variables, presets will be nothing more than a starting point. And often board creep happens where the settings on the board are changed to compensate for the variables, then the player changes things to compensate for that. Rinse and repeat. Presets get you back at known starting point at the board, but the players variables remain unchanged. As was mentioned above, it is probably time to get a professional well versed in the Wing to at least create a new preset or two based on what's going on now. Keep learning and don't be offended that someone with more experience can get you where you need to be with a lot less stumbling. Learn from them as well and ask questions.

I've been mixing in church on a Wing for years. Those EQ graphs look wrong to me. How did the person who set that up get the whole curve to be way below zero? And why would you?
I'm guessing there are channel trim controls with gain cranked up at the physical input, or somewhere at beginning of DSP chain.
Or maybe there's an "autogain" feature that backs down all channels to keep master buss from clipping, but that would be more sensibly done at a plain gain stage rather than as EQ gain scaling.

The idea is to save different presets for different situations. A different bassist comes on stage, recall the preset for that bassist. The same bassist pulls at a different bass with a similar output level, recall a different preset.

I am not familiar with the specifics of how the WING operates. The digital boards I ran did not allow you to save the input trimmer setting as it was an analog control rather than digital. I worked out around this by manually adjusting trimmers as needed. AFAIK some digital mixers do allow you to save the input trim because it's digital...or there are other ways to work around this issue. AFAIK the WING allows you to save a snapshot of the entire channel including a digital trimmer, rather than just custom EQ.

OR...a completely different band comes up on stage and you recall a snapshot of totally different mix. AFAIK there are even ways to save and recall configuration settings. For example, maybe you need to reassign mic inputs because one mixer is serving two different stages, so one band can basically start playing seconds after the band on the other stage has stopped.

There is a school of thought among some mixing engineers that you should never boost EQ, only cut. Whoever did these curves seems to be a radical disciple of that philosophy.
In your case I wouldn't worry too much about this kind of academics and just follow your ears. If you need to boost to make it sound good, boost away!
 
Pro touring sound engineer here, like it’s my day(mostly night 🤣) job.
It’d always hard to judge staring at an EQ curve and hearing & seeing the rest of the setup.
That said with exception of the kick maybe they look over eq’d. That said sometimes you have to do that in bad situations bad room acoustics / poor speaker quality etc.
as some others have said. Best case is hire a real pro engineer to dial in a starting place and gain stage properly.
That said. The problem with that and then volunteers can be they tweak it over time and or things change in sound over time which is why having a pro there to assist accordingly is ideal. Although not always in the budget unfortunately

I used to run sound at a mega church professionally.

My goal was to run my EQs flat. It took awhile to get there because I needed different mics but once I did it sounded sooooo good.

Audix mics on the drums. They’re super scooped so they’re pre-EQd for THAT drum sound.

Shure 87s on the girl vocals for some air. 58s on the boys for some nice upper mids.

57s on the guitar amps because that’s what a guitar amp sounds like. Bass and acoustic were direct. If I didn’t like the tone of the instruments I talked to the players and we sorted it out.

I used compression on everybody at first and the live stream sounded like a record but the worship leader felt it was robbing the dynamics in the room so I went to compression only on vocals. He was right. Felt better in the room.

Oh and I only sent kick, toms and bass to the subs so I didn’t need to do a bunch of HPF on everything.

OK.. FWIW - I've been freelance running a Wing at a local church as needed for almost 2 yrs.
I was there 2 weeks ago.. my prior visit was April '25.

I couldn't - at first - figure out why everything was muffled.
Mains and sub groups (DCA's) were set to 0dB level. OK.
3 vox, acoustic, keys and trax faders were pegged.
EQ looked OK at first glance, but it's just a starting point. I tweaked later, adding some clarity in the 5-6k range to remove the mud!

I drilled down and found out that their "volunteer" FOH person (or someone else who filled in) had set compression on every channel.
OK. Really? I hate that folk insist on using something just because it's there.
But one every channel, including vocals it was set to 6:1 !!! :drool:
There's little in any church service that warrants that level of compression on vocals, but also on everything else.
I understand that might be necessary on a screamo rock vocalist.. but ???
There was also a -50dB threshold and [only] 2dB of makeup gain. They squashed the life out of everything!!
I pulled the vox faders down, killed the compression, and BINGO!
We got some LIFE (back in the mix) !!

I always save my mixes, so at the end of the service I saved the scene for later recall.
They mean well, but..
YMMV - on the above settings.
 
Hopefully they will be patient with me on this. Im not the worship director, or on the board. Just a musician volunteering and trying to give my 2 cents in. "Production" sales people are having a field day with the modern church and taking advantage of enthusiastic young leaders who think the show is whats needed to keep people in. Im in the middle. I understand the need to attract youth and the youth likes shiney objects and constant visual entertainment, but crazy light shows, lasers, LED Screens everywhere, gigantic sound systems and then the outsourced install and programming time needed to get it all working and ready for the weekend is just huge costs that are a bit overkill in my opinion.
I hope your experience and pragmatism will be recognized and ultimately move the needle in the right direction. Even if it takes patience.
 
So I'm not into eq-ing with my eyes, but I don't like some of those EQ curves. Especially the bass, which is killing everything above 2K. Best bet is what others have said, get someone in who really knows how to run a system and work with you. Sometimes it's worth just starting over and dialing it in from scratch, also.

For the sake of someone reading this hoping to learn, the reason for this "rule" is that console channels and busses have finite headroom. So if you've set your gain to maximize signal level, EQ boosts are more likely to result in distortion. And distortion on console busses can bite you in the butt, when everything sounds fine soloed, but when mixed together it's a distorted mess. This is less of an issue on digital consoles, but can still happen.
That said, beyond gain-staging, there isn't really a reason to cut only. I frequently boost EQ. But I do this stuff professionally, and have made enough mistakes to know what to look out for. And if someone is not totally confident in their ability to make it sound good, cutting is a good way to make sure you're not painting yourself into a corner.


A couple more "rules" that I definitely break, but which may help improve your mixing:

Resist doing extreme EQ tweaks. If you're doing more than +/-6dB, you're probably trying to fix something which should be addressed elsewhere in the chain (or arrangement). I'm being generous here. Most of my EQ changes are less than 4dB, with a fairly wide Q.

Don't adjust EQ settings with a source soloed. It WILL sound different in the context of the mix, and how it sounds in the mix is what matters.

Don't compress everything. In fact, avoid using channel compressors unless you know you need them. Some things definitely do. And depending on the genre, lots of things might. But just like how in a small venue, the best thing you can do is start your mix by listening to the band in the room without sound reinforcement, and then only adding what's needed to the PA, start with assuming that the only thing that needs compression is the lead vocal. And even then, not super aggressive. 3:1, slow attack, quick release. Just reducing a few dB on the loudest parts.

For the past few months I have been the main person for front of house sound at my church. I am not a "Sound Engineer", didnt claim to be when I volunteered to help, but id like to think i have a good ear. I play bass in the worship group as well and there was one guy that ran the board that did a good job but he took on a new job and cant be there as often which is why I stepped up. The others not so much. It was always nothing was layered right, or thin, or just plain flat. Supposedly there was a guy that was a "sound engineer" and he made the mix that we are supposed to use. That mix is that we are supposed to us is the one that does not sound right / good.

We are using a Behringer Wing. I am continuously learning the ins and outs of the board, the set up and plugins. One thing I dont understand with how this mix we are supposed to be using is the EQ settings. I included some images. Everything is set WAY below the "0"dB line which in turn just to get nominal gain correct, the gain has to be turned WAY high. The mix on one of the guitars was a +35dB gain just to make it nominal and still had to push the fader to +2-3 just make it present in the mix. Acoustic had to be a +40 gain. Trim on alot of the inputs whether its a vocal mic or instrument is usually no more than +4db. Ive had to do alot of EQ work on this saved mix already but I have been doing the altering from the point that was previously set up. Normally I would think that you would want the EQ to start form the "0" line and you cut or boost from there. I was going to try and create my own base mix one of the rehearsal days and start everything form the 0 line and EQ from there to see how it goes. That previous sound engineer they had do this is no longer around and the guy that had him do it is no longer around. the lead Pastor has mentioned about getting new speakers install through out the worship center and under the platform. The current system is in place in the up towards the ceiling, so i would say maybe 30ft up. It doesnt sound bad, I have had many compliments on how the sound has been since I have made adjustments and the worship team likes it when Im on the board. But you cant "feel" the music in the platform with this system. The bass and kick is there with still some more room to grow but you dont have that physical feel in your feet because the speakers are in the air. I do not agree that it is the best use of church funds to put subs under the platform. Especially when people want to go up to the alter to pray or be prayed for. They dont want to have to speak over the kick drum or bass guitar in there face.

Basically I want to optimize what we currently have before he considers new equipment. Much better things the funds could go to. And I absolutely do not even want the notion to be considered to have one of these AudioLink programs put in place. The attached images are of a couple instrument inputs, vocal mics and the pastors headset mic before I really had messed around with them to much and is on a 60dB scale. Let me know what you think! Oy. Those EQ Pics are hurting my brain a bit.

Doing live sound is less about having a good ear and more about reproducing audio in a room and adapting to the room, with some balancing and mixing involved.

In a magical ideal world, you'd hire a professional sound engineer who knows what they're doing to set it up properly and not how the previous guy did it.

If it's gonna be you doing it, that's fine. You can probably get it close-enough to good, and probably can get it better than whatever that is in your pics. Also, I'd fix the mix before buying new speakers because the speakers are only going to sound as good as the mix. A good mix is free. New speakers are expensive.

If I was the one fixing things, this is what I'd do:
0 - Ring out the room. Not sure if your PA has a feedback suppressor, a Graphic EQ, or if the Main Out of the Wing has a way to EQ/Suppress feedback. But basically, ring out the room to find the frequencies that feedback in that room. It's not about EQ to sound good. It's EQ to adjust for the room.

1 - Zero the board. Undo everything the previous engineer did. All the EQs and Compressors and other FX off, and all the gains and levels and faders down to 0.

2 - Go track by track, setting the gain for that instrument so it's peaking somewhere around -12dB.

3 - Go track by track soloed, bring the fader up until it's a reasonable volume by itself. Then listen to how the instrument sounds in the room. Load up an EQ for the channel.

- High pass the low frequencies below the lowest frequency that instrument plays.

- Listen for frequencies that are too boomy or present and pull them back a little bit. Don't need to be extreme cuts. Just enough to make the too-much frequencies equalized to the. You're listening for something that's booming in the room, or places where the harmonics stack weird and become too much compared to the rest of the frequencies.

- After only using REASONABLE amounts of negative EQ, then listen and see if the tone is "missing" too much of anything you want to boost. But you're doing live sound so boost gently, smoothly, and only where necessary. And remember, cutting with the EQ and pushing the fader a little more is often better than boosting an EQ band. (I caps-locked REASONABLE because whoever was before you did not understand what that meant.) :laugh:

- For instruments that need it (bass, kick, snare, vocals) you can pull up a compressor and just let them kiss the compressor at their sweet spot. At most maybe 4:1. But 2:1 will do a lot live. Remember 3dB double the power. So 3dB of gain reduction is actually more than it seems. A little compression goes a long way. If you can hear the compression it's probably too much.

- If it needs it, a noise gate on the snare can be helpful. Again, be very judicious and conservative with its application.

4 - Bring all the faders down to zero and then begin to mix:
- Start with the vocals. Get them to the level you want them. They're the anchor volume. Everything else needs to fit around them.
- Then bring up the kick. Balance the kick to the vocal volumes. Ideally you shouldn't move this fader either.
*** if you start losing the vocals or kick in the mix, don't push them louder. Bring everything else down, or start over. ***
- Then do the rest of the kit.
- Then the rest of the instruments starting with the bass and going up the frequency range of instruments.

You should be able to get decent balanced mix with that alone.
You can also add a little bit of reverb to the vocals, guitars, snare, and non-kick drums if they need it. But use it extremely sparingly and use a shorter decay time. The room itself has its own reverb and adding too much will wash out the entire mix.

The tricky bit about saving templates is, different instruments have different frequency response curves. A P Bass is mid-forward. A Jazz Bass with both pickups up is scooped. No template EQ setting is going to work for all basses in a the room. Same goes for the other instruments as well.

Similarly, different instruments and pedalboards have different outputs, (plus the musicians thinking they're clever and turning themselves louder mid-set), so you gain you saved might not be right for someone who brought an instrument with hotter output than the week prior, or turned up their gain or keyboard volume more this week than last.

I don't have specific Wing experience, but perhaps you can save templates for certain arrangements and recall them depending on which musicians show up, and which instruments they bring, and even then, you might have to adjust a bit each time.

One more small comment about the crazy EQs in the board right now. The fact that they're all below 0dB, whatever the previous guy was trying to accomplish with that could have been solved by just lowering the gain or the fader. Decreasing every EQ band is just lowering the volume. And boosting every EQ band is just boosting the gain. That's the reason we have gains and faders. They could have just turned down the gain or the fader and used normal EQ curves off the 0dB line. I mean, walking into situations like this is one of the reasons I won't do live sound professionally anymore. :cool::laugh:

The overall take here is......
- The systems sure looks like everything is over EQ / processed.
- You should bring in some who really knows how to set up a system and create a mix.

I would save those settings as a scene back it up just because and do a full mixer reset.
If you mean plug ins from something like a Waves server, don't bother your self with any of that right now, that mixer can do
all you at this time.
Speaking of the mixer, a Wing is a big mixer to jump into cold, the person you bring in should know a Wing inside and out and give
some operational lessons as well.

The speaker system and any outboard processing should be gone through as well

Agreed. Unfortunately, in most of the HOW systems I've designed and installed to keep it simple for volunteers presets have more to do with getting the system to a known baseline and snapshots of mute groups than adjusting the actual mix. In fact I think snapshot is a better term to use. Snapshot 1- everything muted except for the organ or walk up music. Snapshot 2- pulpit of headset mic only (mute organ). Snapshot 3- band mix. Etc., etc. I wouldn't expect a volunteer to remember any of the 15 possible presets for the bass guitar channel, hoping none of the other channels were tied to that preset. I tend to lock a lot of functionality out for basic user, lest they end up with 40 channels of heavy compression across the board!

Yeah, right! However I would return the board to how I started.

I totally understand the need for this. IMHO the OP seems to be at higher level than this.

Fortunately those days are long gone now it seems. Gone too are the days a harried sound tech handed you a DI and said “Here, you do it” and moved off to the guitar amp. The digital sound realm is an entirely welcome evolution, even if the desired result hasn’t changed.
And the Wing is NOT a console untrained volunteers who know nothing about audio should be running.
It's VERY deep and complex.
Yes, it can be simple to run if one is just pushing faders.
But routing, input/outputs, inserts and the inevitable need to use every darn insert on every darn channel is typical of the volunteer type!
Fundamental knowledge of gain-staging, EQ, compression and gates is a must.. and WHEN to use appropriately.
I've lost count of the HOW's I've worked at that have every single one of those features active on every channel.
Then add in the channel insert capabilities of the WING and one can totally destroy a HOW mix in secs and not know why!

Church sound is a CHALLENGE - You're usually dealing with volunteers of minimal skill and knowledge. Few are motivated enough to show up mid-week for hands-on training. Often the story is the same on the stage so the FoH tech is left trying to do a good mix with a band that isn't giving you much to work with.

We have our Wing set to make it easier for noobs. Most channels are pre-set with EQ, comp, effects so you can build a mix by just adjusting the trim and then moving sliders. We have individual channels saved for each vocalist so you have a good starting baseline. All the intricate setup was done by in-house folks so when something needs to change we can respond.
