Building a custom cab, how should I place the speakers?

As the title of this post indicates, I am lucky enough to be able to build my own cab. In thinking about it, I have thought of a couple different ways to place the speakers. I figured I would get suggestions from people on this site to see what they think. The plan, as of now, is to use 1X15 and 4X10's. The 15" would be in the center of the cab with the 4x10's being in each corner. How do people think that will sound? The other option I was thinking of was placing the 15" on the bottom and then just 2x10's above that. How do you think that will sound?

Is mixing a 15" speaker with a few 10's a good idea?

I'm open to suggestions.

All of these are pretty much gold standard boutique cabs. BFM, and fEARful have forums too... and this site has a few genuine experts in this field. including some you'll find at the above sites!

BTW, I would never consider building my own cabinet a thing of luck. Either you have the time or the skill. Luck is hitting the lottery and having someone else build you a cabinet.

Understandable, maybe I should rephrase it. I have a friend who builds custom cabs and has offered to help me build one.

It might look cool, but not a good design acoustically. The 10s would be spaced at a point where certain frequencies will cancel resulting in an uneven spectrum. Even worse that you are mixing 10s and 15s. It is strongly suggested that you either stick with 10s or 15s only and make sure you vertically align your drivers.

As noted above, there are some plans available for DIY that will take a lot of the guesswork out for you. The existing plans have already been optimized which will save you the time and frustration in prototyping and optimization.

I have a rock solid unported cab with an old 15" speaker. 2 holes at top corners that used to have cheap tweeters are now the ports.

Sounds great but thinking of putting in couple of small 5 inch drivers and closing it up again.
