Building a Dave Pushic possibly

I'm having a bass built by Bud LeCompte. I haven't heard anything negative about his work, and a couple of his basses got great reviews in Bass Gear Magazine. I've never been within 100 miles of a LeCompte but, based entirely on his reputation, I spec'd out a VB5, and the pictures look fantastic. He has a huge array of available body styles. Here's a link to his site: LeCompte Electric Bass.

If you can wait a few weeks, I can let you know about the finished product. His pricing is surprisingly reasonable for what you get. Here's a couple of the last pics he sent me.

"Worlds apart"?? Is that so? Exactly what model DP bass did you own????? :eyebrow:

Yes, it is so! I owned this DP bass (7 string):

I later bought a new LeCompte (ST-5) which was one of the first LeComptes built:

And correct, there was NO comparison on build quality. The LeCompte was exacting. Everything was perfect on it. It was amazing. The DP was quite the opposite.

The pickup routes were rough and uneven, the wood laminates on the neck-thru body were starting to separate, where the headstock was glued to the top of the neck was slightly off center and sloppy.

You asked for it, so there you have it! The DP was a P.O.S.!

I had one built. Sound was great. It was truly an amateurish piece of luthery though. He was great to deal, really nice guy, just not very good at his chosen profession. Luckily I was able to pawn that bass off at a reasonable loss.

I agree with WSO; my experience was similar, although 'reasonable' in my case was a $700 loss since I had a luthier try to fix many issues before the sale happened. Live and learn.

I had a DP Custom as well (Singlecut). I was very dissapointed in it. The finish was just horrible and came off after one gig (hand rubbed poly finish). The neck felt like a baseball bat even thought we talked about having a thin neck.

There are alot of really great builders here on TB. Head over to the Luthier's Corner to view a few.

I played a LeCompte at Atlanta Bass Gallery. It was weird, but really nice from what I recall.
