Would anyone be up for an annual building contest? I think it would be fun. We can set up a theme, or secret ingredient (too much iron chef sorry) like walnut or wenge, a budget, a due date for submission, get a few other guys on the forum to judge, offer some sort of prize. Whadaya think?

There are some great builders out here , (what are chances for a newbie to go against those guys) but I would give it a shot.
I couldn't build a bass to save my life, but I'd love to see the pics of what you all came up with. Maybe you could have classes...novice and expert or something like that.
I like the idea of a budget build contest. do like a $100-200 limit and see what people can come up with.
This could be the budget for the wood. The Hardware is where all the money is sunk into.

What's the point in comparing basses with a bunch of crappy hardware / electronics? The main reason most of us build in the first place is because of quality, quality, quality.
I agree. I think it'd be cool if all the participants had to use the exact same materials, including hardware and electronics. A small budget could be placed on top of that to give a chance for each builder to seperate their project from the others. So in a way, it'd be the opposite of the Iron Chef. All the materials would be the same except for each builder's own "secret ingredient". I think that'd make for an interesting competition.
Also, it'd be pretty cool if each builder supplied something for the whole group - whether it be hand-wound pickups, hardware, wood, or whatever. That way it would be group sponsored, and it would also keep it more of a TalkBass community event. I look forward to seeing what happens with this.

I was thinking about that too... but if you place a budget it limits a lot of what you are able to do, no matter how talented you are or what experience you have. We also may want to consider making rules like if you do sell instruments regularly, you must build an original model for the contest... level the playing field a bit...
Also, I don't like the idea of having to use the same parts. What if someone wants to use an indi bridge set up and other wants to use something else. Instruments are meant to be played and if you are forced to use a product that you are not completely happy with then what is the point. This brings up another good point... basses should be judged on looks and sound... we'll need sound clips..
I was thinking a budget to take the money factor out of it, just to focus on design/build quality. I just said the $100 - 200 range to allow more entries (maybe get some people to attempt a build that wouldn't otherwise. All that being said, I wouldn't have a problem with a higher/unlimited budget as I was speaking for people without the expendable income (high school/college students mostly). Either way, If there is a contest (regardless of conditions) I will enter.
Well that is why we would have a long time to submit entries. When I build (for myself that is... commission is different), I rarely buy everything in 1 shot. It's a process... a bit here, a bit there. But I too was thinking around the $600-$1000 range. It's hard to build a quality instrument for anything under that.
