- I am a hobbyist making stone picks that I sell but mostly give away. They made me do this anyways.
Unlike lead singers and lead guitarists, who are busy fighting off the groupies, bassists like me have time for projects.
I feel sorry for drummer's. They sit in the back, blocked from being seen by the audience by the guitar players. Unable to see the audience and the adoration of the masses.
It was time to lift the drummer. Let him see and be seen and not just heard!
I saw a DIY video on YouTube on how to make a drum riser. I worked out that I could build one s LOT cheaper than I could buy one.
I basically needed 2 sheets of plywood. Some 2x2 stringers, piano hinge, 4 door hinges, 12 5-gallon plastic buckets with tops and some outdoor carpet.
I built 3 sections 2 x 8 feet long, hinged in the middle with piano hinge for a total size of 6' x 8'. I took the 4 door hinges and used them to hold the 3 sections together. Mounted 4 pail lids under each section, putting 2 closer to center to give better center support.
I added a black cloth with glitter to hide the pails and this is what the test run looked like.
With the 15" lift, the drummers head is now at the same height as ours! 15 minutes to set up or tear down. The sections fold into 2' x 4' units that fit in the van.
It is solid and the guitar guys want to jump off it!
Total cost was less than 300 bucks. About 6 hours to build.
