Buying a new bass

I need a new bass because i will be starting a band soon and i was wondering what is a good bass for playing pantera metallica avenged sevenfold black sabbath etc.
My budget is $400 and i perfer passive pickups but i will be willing to use active. Oh and lastly it must be a four string. Thanks

Metallica (gonna depend on the era and album. Cliff Era is Aria II and Rickenbacker)
Avenged Sevenfold. Not a clue - Going to guess Schecter like there guitars
Black Sabbath - P Bass and Orange Amplifier
Pantera - Not sure what rex used.

These bands vary a lot, and the tones/styles that the individual player crafted vary by album and era. Is there a song that is a particularly good snapshot of tone for you?

I used to be a thrash guy. Loved me some metal. I'll always dig Iron Maiden. Up the Irons
These days I do hard rock with blues and psychedelic influences (see signature below). Maybe that tone is something you'd go for?

My 2 cents is that you should get one with active pups. I like the versatility of them. I'm partial to the Spectors and the Peaveys in that price range. I believe Rex uses Spectors. They are really balanced when you stand up.

get yourself an old kramer from the 80's. that's what the guy from pantera used in this song:

gotta love the old "3 guitars strumming on the grave stones" bit at 30 seconds in!

this was when metal was blending with what became grunge. brilliant video for that song - you can also hear Thin Lizzy in them that's why i'm into it.

\m/!!!
