Buying a rack case

I have to carry my rig to church twice a week and I don't want any knobs braking off my amp or any thing so I want to invest in a rack case. I've done a lot of research and thought about building one my self but decided against it. so now I ask:
Should I buy wooden or plastic?
What should I expect to pay used? (I'm on a tight budget)
Where is a good place to buy?

Just so you know, I have a backline 600 head and for dimensions I only wanted a 15" depth so it fits over my cab nicely, and I only wanted a 4 space.

I just bought a OSP 4 space ATA from Sigler Music on Ebay. $120 delivered.
14" depth and full open front and back. 3/8" ply.

Some of the newer SKB have a tiny back door which I find annoying. That being said SKB cases are wonderful as well.
Check the for sale stuff here on talkbass for good deals.

Haven't gotten it yet but perfect depth sturdy and the price was right.

I bought a 4 space Gator Rack Bag and it has held up well. It's also a lot more convenient to be able to sling it over my shoulder with the shoulder strap as it frees up both my hands to carry my bass and open doors without having to put anything down.

Im a little biased here as i work for a flightcase company in the UK. Plastic cases are good but i would have to admit that a proper wooden case would be a better investment.

The wooden cases are a bit heavier but on the flip side alot stronger. In the UK a 4 Unit plastic case would set you back about £100. A wooden one from the company i work for would be around £120.

Most custom case companies would offer a custom body depth to meet your requirements.

i think that you would be happy with an SKB Standard 4U Effects Rack # 1SKB19-4U. they have great seals, built very well, have a lifetime guarantee and the advantage over alot of the other rack case companies is that their latches are on the lids as opposed to on the case. when you put your head on top of a speaker cab, there are no latches to rattle around due to vibration. I always wondered why Gator's rack cases didn't pick up on this?

I picked up an 8 space SKB rack for $60. Plastic cases are nice, cant really comment on a wooden since Ive never owned one. Just keep an eye on craigslist,ebay, and local used music stores and youll find a deal on one.

Yeah, I think I'm leaning toward a plastic due to weight and price and that latch issue is one that would probable bother me. So I'm going to see what I can find as far as the skb cases.

SKB's Lifetime warranty is a joke. I had an SKB 4 rifle gun case that had two of the latches fail. According to their website, it is a no hassle policy for them to send out replacements that are field serviceable. HA! Four e-mails and two phone calls to customer support netted me NOTHING! They totally blew me off. I was wearing my diplomat hat during the whole dialogue, so I'm quite sure I didn't rub them the wrong way.

I ended up giving the case away and will never buy their gear again.
