Buying an instrument without trying it out

Of my 5 basses, only one have I played before buying: my Peavey Millenium BXP5.
I was trying out prospective new amps and wanted to add a cheap 5 string, and it fit the bill nicely.

My 4 Ricks were: 2 surprise finds, one ebay auction (my first ebay purchase!) and one ordered from a dealer (MF).

I'm very happy with all of them.
