Buying Rehearsal Drums

We're probably going to buy some drums for rehearsal.

I thought this is something that many of you have done or might do some day. Let's exchange notes on low end stuff that has actually cut it.

What low end kits do you have familiarity with - that don't suck. Forum Exports? How about all those low end Verve kits?

Buying cymbals is the worst part of putting together a kit. Great cymbals are insanely expensive.

Ever use any of those low end cymbal sets? I have heard the Sabian B8's, and I think they're pretty bad.

Anyone use any other cymbal sets that don't suck? I have read some decent stuff about some of the low end Paistes.

Cymbals are very easy to cart around. Most drummers are expected to move their own cymbals, and maybe their own snare drum. If the drummer is too lazy to do that,...

Buying cheap cymbals is not much better than throwing money down the toilet. Buy a cheap shell pack, or get one used for next to nothing, and be done with it.

Yes, drummers will bring favorite cymbals, but, we're going to have cymbals there on this set, so we'd like to see who has experience with what. Some of the low end cymbal packs are attrocious, but there May be one or two these days that aren't.

How low end to you want to go? As far a Pearl it goes Forum, Export, and then there are maybe 3 other exports that cost a little more. I have a Sessions Fusion kit I'm selling. My guitatist also gigs as a drummer so I think he's buying it but you could PM me if you wish.
Tama makes inexpensives sets, so does Gretsch. You can pay a little more and go Pacific, of Yamaha, which is what I would do.
Face it, Cheap cymbals are going to be chaep cymbals. If you don't like the Sabians or the Zildjians, try the Paste PST's. If he's already got a good set, I'd just use those.

My set, dw Collectors series 6 piece, natural statin. Sabian AAX Cymbals.

well im primarily a drummer so i guess i know a lot on the topic...


it really depends on what your price range is and what style of music you play...

a nice set to look at might be some of the gretsch catalina kits (arround $600).... theyre relatively inexpensive and sound great (i have a 9 peice catalina maple in my garage).... and they come in a few different varieties depending on what style theyre going to be used for...

as far as cymbals are concerned i'd recomend getting either a set of Link Removeds or Link Removeds...

I picked up a yamaha yd set several years back now... they've been great for rehearsals - drummers have been happy and they sound great. My cymbals suck - they're zbt's... BUT - I got the set complete with drums, cymbals, hardware and a crappy throne for around 500... they've held up great and have been used on a few gigs as well with no complaints.

I've seen the shells used for around 300...

If you don't care about color matching you can practically steal single drums off of Ebay. I put together an awesome Pearl Masters Kit with full Sabian AA cymbals for well under $800. The toms were a discountinued color, the kick a discontinued size, the snare a blem, the cymbals came in a pack and I got a deal on hardware. It's great sounding kit, and I don't care that the colors don't match.

I'm a drummer, too. Well, I used to be - I started my musical life on drums, studied for many years, and gigged for many years. But, it has been over 10 years since I looked at drum gear.

Have you heard the ZHT's? I'd like to hear them, but I don't see a way to hear them online. The earlier Zildjian low end cymbal packs were bad, but I'd certainly like to give the ZHT's a shot if they're supposed to be decent.

As I continue researching, I roll back to the same lament I had when I was an active drummer - there are Plenty of legitimate affordable drum shell kits out there, but decent cymbals Never came down in price.

Even the low end XS20's come to over 4 bills for a ride, hi hat, and single crash.

Friend of mine just bought a 100 dollar pos kit off of craigslist at my suggestion. He brings his snare back home to use it to practice (his real kit is at the practice space, this was for his house), put some heads on and tuned it, and its not bad. For a rehearsal kit and nothing more, I don't think it really mattered, but I do agree cymbals thta don't suck REALLY make a differnce. For that, we have been patient on craigslist, and snagged some sabians and zildjians at a very nice price.
