Buzzing on E string - Kala U-Bass

Recently I plugged in my Kala U-Bass Journeyman for the first time in a while, and when playing any note on the E string, there is an electronic buzz (not fret buzz - it happens on the open string as well). This issue shows up when plugged into my amp and my recording interface. None of the other strings exhibit this. Preliminary research points to a broken piezo pickup. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Check to make sure the peizo element(s) are sitting in the saddle slot nice and flat. Check the bottom of the bridge and make sure it’s flat and sitting properly in the bridge slot. Any unevenness there will cause all sorts of fun issues.

I messed with it some more today, and the sound is actually distortion. Playing the bass unplugged, there is a rattle somewhere when playing the E string. Something is clearly loose.
