And yeah, everybody should always bring charts but nobody ever does, lol😂
The first sentence about the singers moving among 3 keys in the A section was the main bit though. If it's a pickup thing, or a jam session, the singer's failure to be professional is more their problem than mine if they don't bring charts.

Open strings are stopped at the upper end by a plastic nut or a metal zero fret, many times harder and stiffer than the string passing through it.
Fretted strings are stopped at the upper end by a metal fret, many times harder and stiffer than the string passing through it.

I do believe Phil was misapplying an old violin-familly shibboleth to something where it doesn't apply.
