Double Bass Cab/amp Shootout. Guess who won

2. AI Contra EX cab with GB Shuttle 6.2

3. Genzler Acoustic Pro Gollihur Model

One of these stood out with tight, rich bass and crystal clear mids and highs. More transparent and natural sounding.

I have no context for two of these amps. But I would guess that the Contra would not produce tight sounding bass. Can’t tell if the Genzler is sealed or ported, but it’s an interesting design and I’ve always wanted to try one.

Nor do I. My powered MAS 1/8’s are exceptional, but between the Gollihur and the MAS, it’s anyone’s best guess.

Hehe I voted for the contra because I think there's a chance at home it sounds brilliant .... and I assume a bit of chaos in these types of threads.

In reality I don't think the MAS has crystal clear mids and highs. Maybe the Genzler is the safe bet?

In most cab/amp Shootouts, I would have to go with the cab, just because of the size advantage.

I actually sold it recently, mostly for weight reasons - for walking around NYC reasons.

Mine had a 8" speaker and the 3" (?) mid driver. It was the 2nd gen I think? Hard to keep track with Mike's stuff I tried quite a bunch of the different offerings over the years, I'm not saying the MAS speakers don't have great mids / highs, just that I wouldn't label them crystal clear -- more ... naturalistic I guess. Could be just a semantic thing though?

I totally get that, the early versions of the MAS 1/8 we’re smaller and lighter, but I still wouldn’t be able to
carry it while wheeling the bass on the street.

I have a Genzler 123 and a Mas 28. Both great cabs. I’d prob pick the Genzler and Ive only had the MAS for a few months now so am more used to the Genzler which I have had for few years.

Third place: Contra. I was a little surprised as it beat out another (un-named cab on the gig 'by an order of magnitude) according to the pianist on that gig.

Second place: the Genzler. It really sounds good and is a wonderfully versatile rig with two channels and phantom power.

First place: MAS 16 two way w 3' mid. In my studio this was the clearest, most natural sounding.

Test was done using a KNA DB1 piezo.

The proof of the pudding was the gig Saturday night. As I've mentioned before, it's a difficult, boomy room. I had my good bass and ran the KNA straight into the BAM/MAS 16 which was on a short pole right behind us. I thought it sounded really nice. Also, the pianist made an unsolicited comment about how Wonderful the bass sounded. Looks like I've found my best rig for that room.
