Cab before head?

I am planning on getting myself a new head and cab soon. But I can only afford one at a time I'd say it would be another 3+ months before I'd get the other.
Which is more important to get first??

Definitely cab; so long as the head doesn't completely suck.

what kind of head and cab are you using now? To me that would determine your immediate need. If head is ok and cab is not and your giggin I would probably go with cab 1st. Hard to say without more info.

i would get the speaker first. the new speaker will sound better than a new head with your old cab.

Yes, another vote for a new cab.

An okay head with a great cab sounds way better than a great head with a crappy cab...

If I was you and had cash in the pocket for halve of the rig, do the smart thing. I would sit back and wait for the right deal at the right time for the head or cab I was looking for. Worst case scenario you buy both at the same time in three months.

I'm just using a fender rumble combo amp. Very cheap.

I'd wait. No reason to spend money on either unless a) you're getting a great price, or b) you're purchasing something hard to find. I'd purchase my head and cabinet together unless one of these were true.

Being that your using a rumble combo it would not make sense IMO to purchase cab or head. Not sure how you effectively use either with combo. In this case I would agree with others who suggest you wait till you can buy both. What are you doing right now, are you in a gigging band? Seems to me what your wanting to do would dictate what you buy. I bought a back up GK400RB 200 watts at 4ohms which I use for practice or as a back up for $175. There are great used deals out there. I have an avatar cab which I find great buy for quality and can be bought used pretty reasonably. GOOD LUCK

If you get a fEarful/nEarful cab it will, in PA-like fashion, transparently pass through whatever you put into it. This will provide you with the greatest flexibility of amp and instrument choices for years to come.

Thanks for all the feedback. The head would be more important as I could take with me to gigs etc. I was playing on one of these tiny GK heads today, sounded very flash and was really light!!

I guess if you're headlining you could go DI but you'd make more friends taking your own cabinet on a multi band gig. I'd much rather lend my amp to a cab than vice versa, not that I'm at all keen on lending gear full stop.
