CAB combination discusion

Which combination of cabs would you use from Hartke Hydrive? For rehearsal and small to medium gigs

Hello guys,

I want to purchase some cabinet + amp. From Hartke maybe.. Im interested in this hydrive and hydrive hd cabinets..
My doubt is: What combination of cabinets should i get..
Please tell me that are the pro and cons, your thoughts, and type of sound (deep, punchy etc) of this combination of cabs (and finally recommend one combination):

amp + 1x12 =
amp + 2x10 =
amp +2x10 + 1x12 =
amp + 4x10 =
amp + 4x10 + 1x12 =
amp + 4x10 + 1x15 =
amp + 4x10 + 4x10 =

Im interested in home practicing, rehearsing with the band, and medium to small gigs.. so i want the individual parts to be less than 40-50 lb but still a really punchy and deep and good sound !

"amp" is too generic.
Tell us which Hydrive(s) you are interested in.
We need to know how much power you'll have available.

Medium gig is your largest venue, for everything else just turn down.
How big of a space? Indoors? Outdoors?
What other players are in your band.
Playing Hard Rock, or soft ballads?
How loud will you need to be?
Do you have sound reinforcement available or is everything coming from the amps?

Don't mix cabinets. If you buy two, get both the same.

None of the above. Two 1x12s is a great setup for adaptability and portability. I'm not rocking Hydrives, I have two GK Neo 112s and with both of them I have all the power I'd need for all but large rooms and outdoor festivals where I have PA support anyway, and with 1 of them I'm good for rehearsal, home practice, and gigs in smaller rooms.

I agree. I obviously can't speak to the tone of all 1x12s, but purely from a combined displacement potential and form factor standpoint, that is my favorite modular approach for typical bass cabs.

Almost, but not quite as loud as two comparable 2x10s or two 1x15s, but usually smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

I've used several combinations of cabinets over the years, but nothing has worked as well as an 8x10. A large array of small speakers is more efficient than a smaller array of large speakers. This is similar to formula one cars using 5 liter v10s (which is small displacement for a v10 for those not in the know). The idea is that the smaller mass of each piston - or in this case speaker - being driven individually requires less energy.

I didn't vote. I own a Hydrive 1x12 and frankly I have not been impressed. I've never played it too loud - in fact it's naturally mid-shy voicing prevents it from getting very loud - and yet something is crackling now like the tweeter has gone south. It's not terrible but I think there are much better options available now.

Mesa and Genzler, not to mention Thunderchild, Fearless, and Barefaced. I think I may even prefer the old Aguilar 112 (GS maybe?) for softer acoustic and folk, and for rock or funk the Eden 112 XLT, which projects thanks to being a very mid-forward cabinet.

Amp would be the 1000 watts hartke LH something.. i would play hard rock with a drummer that really plays loud and kills my swr 250 watt amp, 2x10.. i really didnt hear or understand the bass with him playing and a guitarist with a 100w fender combo..
. and also 80s funk with slap in another band.. i like crisp punchy sound for slapping and also the lows to hit my chest in hard rock sessions.. gigs are indoor like 100m2 space. A bass teacher of mine told me with 4x10 and 1x15 you get best punch and best bass why.not to mix?
8x10 would be very difficult to fit in my van so now you guys make me think of 4x10 cab or 2x12 cab..

Also.. 1 cab 4x10 its same as 2 cabs 2x10 each?

I have been playing Hartke 35000 amp and 4X10 cab for about 8 years now. I have yet to play a venue that I could not fill with that amp. More than enough for a small or even medium size club. Larger venues you are probably DI'd into the PA anyway.

A. - Most 4X10's go LOWER and louder then 1X15's. There are 10's out there that perform as well as subs, and there are 15's out there that are nothing but midrange. The whole "speaker size" thing has debunked years ago.

B. - The thought of getting the "best of both worlds" only takes into account the positives. The other side of the coin is that you can get the worst of both worlds. The only way to really know is to try them together, and for many, that means making a possibly wasted purchase.

This is what you want. This is at an old rehearsal spot but it never fail to deliver. I have another 410 for when the duty calls. But they are older cabs with new drivers. Both cabs are not light and the one I use on the bottom has casters. But lets face it these old school (SBX series) cabs are amazing. And with the upgraded drivers both of my cabs are freaks of nature tone wise. Dual 410 cabs is the way to go. And whether your using GK head like I use to or the Mesa subway like I do now. The tone can't be beat.
