Cab combo opinions...

I'm running a subway d800+
I have a aguilar db410 cab and a mesa subway 1 15

Sounds amazing, super clear, super loud if needed, usually I turn the tweeter down a touch on the mesa.. but I'm looking for a little more growl and I think I'm looking at maybe a different head for that?

Maybe get the svt cl head and bi amp with the subway? Get the growl and still some punch?

I also run a Ebs valve drive DI pedal and it's nice but it's not quite the snarl I'm looking for. I was thinking of trying a ampeg svt classic tube amp and see where that goes, any opinions on that amps sound? Will it push this cab combo? I've heard some Nasty sounding ampeg and orange amps and it'd be sweet to get that sound, the valve drive gets some of the tone but to my ears it lacks a little bit of that punch and gets a little distorted over the growl I'm looking for, maybe there's a better pedal solution I don't now about?

1. First off, what kind of growly tone are you going for? Can you post a youtube link showing this?
2. What kind of strings are you using?
3. Have you tried the cabs separately? Or do you always use them together?

I ask about the cabinets because they are two completely different designs and the combined tone might be eliminating the growly tone you are looking for. I believe this is called phase cancellation. Using the cabinets separately, does one of them have a growly tone you like?

I suggest testing out these factors first before shelling out a bunch of money for a tube amp. You have some really nice gear that should be able to do what you want.

What kind of bass are you using?
An EBO w/flats ain't gonna get it.
As has already been said, you have nice gear! I don't imagine this is the fault of your equipment.

I have used the cabs separate, they seem to compliment really well, the 410 seems to push out some of the crispier mids the mesa has but not so exaggerated, maybe a little more clarification. my clean tone I really like, I just lose too much bottom end and all the higher mids almost seem gone when I hit distortion, I run the Ebs valve drive on vintage a little past noon for distortion that doesn't sound bad but not as crisp as the clean tone..



Think like old geezer tones for distortion, except I'm playing a epi Thunderbird pro with roto 66 strings, I think that might be why the DB works well with the set up to my ears it's a little bit brighter sounding cab and it helps bring out mids that are a lil lacking on the thundy.

I have an Ibanez sr650 passive/active that I run mostly passive and I kill the bright switch on the head when I run that, sometimes a lil eq change but not usually, sounds almost like a Justin chancellor tone with that bass and set up...elixrs on the ibby...

I'm familiar with phase cancellation and the sound seem to only get more bassy and louder when I run both cabs.

And thanks for the compliments on the gear....

And I think what it is I just want to stack my clean and distortion, the pedal doesn't have the mix control though... I also use a m85 pedal for getting chunky that thing is sick


Is there maybe a 2channel into one pedal or preamp that allows mixing the gain of the two signals? That doesn't color the signal

Overall, it sounds like you need a good clean blend and overdrive pedal working together. I just posted a video tonight and you can REALLY hear my growly, distorted, and mean sounding Spector's. I am running a clean and dirty channel simultaneously. That is how you get the entire range of sound going on. I love Sabbath! Now, I will admit, my tone is a bit more aggressive than Geezer's, but check that out. I can explain more of how I get that if you are interested. I am not too familiar with Thunderbirds, but for the growly tones I am achieving you are likely better off with the Ibanez. You can still get the Thunderbird to growl, but it might work better with different settings versus your Ibanez. I think you need to try out a different distortion/overdrive pedal.
