I never thought of tom cases for cables...that is a great idea actually. If you can find a hard plastic one they are extremely durable and probably would keep things really organized...i think i am stealing this idea, Thanks!

Canvas/nylon gym bags to carry cables tied with inexpensive 'velcro' from Harbor Freight -
$7.99 3/4" x 35 Ft. Roll "Hook and Loop" (Velcro) Cable Strap
Hook on one side, loop fabric on the other, cut to length with scissors.
For $8 you get a 35 foot roll - compare that to what you pay for a pack of 5 velcro cable straps from a music store.

Someone laughed at me for doing using those. I replied that they were fairly rugged, kept out dirt and moisture and costs about 10 bucks. If you want to buy me a fancy flight case for my cables, that would be cool.
We've had to replace them maybe after 5 years, and that's doing about 80-100 shows a year. Plus, they stack, and if you need a taller beer table, well.....
Yup! They stack neatly in my van, and off to the side of the stage, they are waterproof, and cheap. We use the slightly smaller 14 gallon(?) size. You can stack a couple off to the side somewhere to make a small table to set your beer.
I have one for my bass gear, one for "power cords", one for mic cables, one for lighting stuff... They"ve lasted about 5 years so far (we only play 3 -4 times a month) and cost about $5 a piece.
Homemade cable wraps (nylon plus velcro sewed on) and the main stuff goes into two small rubbermaid tubs. Double as emergency stands, blockades to keep dancers AWAY from equipment, etc. Toss a cool piece of fabric over them and viola! Stage decor!
Backup backups are in a thrift store briefcase in the car. friend swears by milkcrates, I like the tubs for being waterproof.
