Subway+ Bass DI-Preamp II

Here is a little bit I found (in the manual)

INPUT LEVEL – This control sets the input signal level (gain) of the preamp. It is also used in conjunction with the MASTER volume control to set the overall output level of the PREAMP and HEADPHONE OUTPUT jacks.

BOOST LEVEL – This control sets the amount of boost level (volume) applied when the BOOST footswitch is engaged. Even when fully counterclockwise, there is a small amount of additional gain (approx. 1dB) applied when the footswitch is engaged. The amount of boost increases as the control is rotated clockwise.


From what I understand, the Boost Level works in conjunction with the Input Level (or gain as some refer to it), much like an Active/Psssive switch, only the Boost is variable unlike an Active/Passive switch.

If I'm wrong, someone will let me know 😂

Just for clarification, the boost is added gain to the signal that feeds the gain amp, so the input gain is the boost stage plus the gain stage which is the signal that the input tube emulation circuitry works on. Operationally, it's like added gain via the gain control but electrically it's done a little differently for noise floor lowering purposes as well as translating this increase to the pre DI output so that the DI out tracks the boost no matter if pre or post. This makes it much more usable in the pre position.

Picked a Subway Preamp DI II yesterday. Wow!!! I didn't think I needed one. Just a nice "try out and maybe add another tone to my TT800 thing". Well, now the problem shows up. Boogie channel, that's my sound! Subway channel, wait a sec, that's my sound. Plug in the Subway pre into a handy effects return and don't you know I've found my sound! All different and all good. How does one pick the winner? And that was with just one bass. Seven more to test.

The headphone option is a great addition. Sitting in the back yard on the swing playing and not bothering a soul. Mesa for the win!!!

Now what to do with the other 189 "O" rings I have left. 😂

My MKII has same problems, what "O" rings did you use?

Those of you removing and reinstalling the knobs, please be gentle as they can be easily over-tightened and either split the knob. That's the disadvantage of an Allen head set screw... spec. is between 3-5 inch-pounds which is snug not TIGHT.

I'm diggin' the option of being able to use the Boost switch to turn on or off the Boost drive into the tube emulation vs turn up or down the gain, or switching the active/passive switch on and off on the WD.

I mean I still do it when I want the harmonic drive from the WD tube front end. But the Subway pre is so much more convenient at my feet and the tube emulation in the preamp is so convincing to me 😊
