Double Bass Cable Sleeves

I bought one of these to wrap my XLR (mic) and 1/4" (pickup) cables together. I thought it was a great idea to help tidy things up a bit, but I was wrong. It was a real b*&^% trying to feed both cables through, and the thing is, the expanding and contracting motion cause it to twist. In retrospect, the twisting seems obvious. Nevertheless, it's nearly impossible to use with 15ft+ cables without them twisting together, which isn't good for the cables and makes it hard to tie them up neatly. I probably should've bought this style.
Anyone else try something like this? I think the stuff in the first link might be okay for short lengths of cable.

Hmmm, those are just a few of the reasons I've gone wireless. But, nothing is perfect, and everyone has to decide what they are willing to put up with.

I wish you the best whatever direction you select.

Please tell us more about your wireless adventure. Why and how? Have you found a solution you're happy with?

About 3 years ago I bought two separate sets of GetAria 2.4GHz TX/RC plug-in dongles from Amazon. I chose 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz because of the distance advantage, betting that I wouldn't run into interference with other RF devices. That bet worked out, I've never had any RF problems with other devices being used and I use them all the time instead of real cables.

My intent in buying two sets was to use one for my DB either with its piezo system or with its mounted mic, and one for my wife's guitar if she ever wanted it, but since she also sings and always uses at least one live stand mic, she opted out of this almost immediately.

So I figured I'd keep them both charged and ready to go, and if during a gig the battery became exhausted with the one I use, I'd have the other to use. As it works out, their battery life is excellent and even in 3+ hour gigs I have never exhausted battery life with either set.

At a gig this year for the first time I've used both TX/RC sets at the same time, sending a separate piezo signal and a separate mounted mic signal, both via wireless, to an FOH. While I'll probably more routinely only use one signal or the other, this mixed well at the FOH and is a possibility in the future if an FOH requests it. I do have a 2 channel amp and have tried that too; it works fine, but for me it is probably more work than it is worth.

I am not any kind of RF wiz kid, nor do I qualify as an audiophile. I play acoustic musical instruments and if I have to use amplification, I simply want it to work.

The TX/RC sets that I purchased each cost around $40US.

I've enjoyed a number of general advantages with wireless:

Freedom to move the DB as needed, unimpeded. I don't dance with my DB, but just the ability to move it around without wires is very freeing.

Fewer cables on the ground. I'm slightly mobility challenged anyway, so having less cables to step on/over is a good thing.

They work equally well with any of my amps or with an FOH. With an amp, just plug it in. With an FOH I just hand the RC plug-in dongle to the sound tech and they go from there.

Advertised as functioning just like cables once properly paired, and this seems to be how they really work out, and I hear no fidelity difference between wireless and real cables.

Disadvantages have never been serious for me, but I would imagine this is what they are with the units that I use:

The units have to be charged. It takes about an hour to fully charge them. The sets each come with a split charging cable so both the TX and RC units can be charged at the same time from the same charging device. The sets do not come with a charging device, so that needs to be provided. Charging takes a little thought, but it hasn't been a major effort; I typically charge both sets the day before gigs. The units were advertised to have a 3 hour charge, I've successfully used them for more like 3.5 to 4 hour gigs, and have not had the batteries exhausted yet.

The TX and RC units have to be paired, and if multiple TX/RC sets are being used at the same time, each set needs to be paired serially, meaning one set at a time. This is actually a pretty simple and well documented process.

Running at 2.4GHZ, there is a increased possibility of having interference. I have not experienced this with the gigs I have been involved with, but it is a possibility. The advantage of 2.4GHz is a RF range of up to about 100ft, although I've usually been within 20ft of an amp or a snake or of something to plug into. There are similar 5GHz units available to purchase.

Some people have reported that the control buttons on the TX unit rattles on their DBs. Neither of the two sets that I use have this problem. My units are 3 years old now, so it's possible that new units have had that situation taken into consideration.

FWIW, I do carry a cable with my amp kit just in case, but haven't used it since going wireless. And yes, I've been very happy with this wireless solution.

I do like those super simple, affordable wireless dongles for pickups and bass guitar, but the wireless units I've seen for mics are more expensive and complicated. I'm using a condenser mic, so it has to have phantom power. I do have a phantom power battery back designed specifically for my mic, but it's pretty heavy, and strapping junk to the tail piece adds up quickly. Is there a mic version for something like the TX/RC units, and if so, can it provide phantom power? If not, perhaps this is a business opportunity.

I bought that in the red and black color to combine a couple of very thin black cables that people kept tripping over on stage. Worked well so far. Holding up and nobody has tripped over it yet! Took a minute to get the knack of sliding my thumb along it to open it up while feeding in the cables, but then it was super quick and easy. Mine coils very smoothly, but it's probably only 10 feet or so.

The mounted mic on my DB is a Sennheiser e604. It's actually a dynamic tom/tuba mic so it uses no phantom power. It's extremely light, mounted on my tailpiece pointing toward the bridge feet and it works very well for my DB. It also works fine with the wireless dongles as-is.

Regarding where to put a heavier battery pack for phantom power, I have mounted my pre-amp for my piezos on the back side of my bow quiver. It's pretty stiff leather and holds the weight very nicely, and the pre-amp is out of sight, but ready to adjust volume and piezo blend any time I need to. If you use a bow, maybe a quiver is a good answer for you???
