Cakewalk help please - beginning home studio

So I'm wanting to start some home recording and I got the 222 home recording kit that includes Cakewalk Music Creator 5 and an output cable with a USB end. So...how do I get the darn thing to work? I plugged it in, I get a little icon in the bottom right corner that says MIDI Input/Output Activity, but when I play nothing happens. I read and re-read the help files and looked around online for help. Has anyone else tried this software? What do I need to do to get this thing started? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like you got the controller (keyboard type, I'm guessing) working correctly - sends note on/off messages to your rig. Now you need an instrument source to get some actual notes triggered. Create an instrument track (or soft-synth track) set MIDI source to your controller, arm the track, and you should be in business.

Thanks for your help guys. I've got it to where it recognizes my instrument (I can see it tracking while I play) but I can't hear it as I play. And if I record the track without hearing it, as soon as I remove the cable, I get an error message and can not play back at all!

Hey dude. . It might help if you post a link to what you bought, I'm just wondering if you've thrown people off by using the word midi? . . . .are just tring to record straight to Sonar through an audio interface? If so just check 'options' 'audio' and make sure you've got your interface selected for playback timing master and record timing master. . . .in the track you're recording to, make sure you have an output selected, if your outputting to a bus, make sure you have the master bus output set to your audio interface. . .

What device are you intending to listen with? If it's the sound card in your PC, you need to make sure it's designated as a MIDI output device under Options | MIDI Devices. Then in the Input / Output pulldown area to the left of each track, make sure that device is selected as the output device.
