Cali76 Standard vs. Compact Deluxe

Does anyone here have any experience regarding these two versions of the Cali76? I've found heaps on the 76-TX and the Compact Bass but not a ton on these two. A local guy wants to work out a deal in which I trade my Cali76 Standard for his new Compact Deluxe plus cash.

While I'm definitely intrigued, I really think that I'd miss the LED strip and the mojo of the big box. My Standard has been a tried-and-true workhorse and I feel absolutely naked without it in my chain, especially live.

Since my version doesn't have the transformer, will I be missing anything tonally? The small footprint and the dry blend are certainly tempting but I haven't found much of a comparison on the two.

Based on a quick demo I had with the Compact Deluxe, the Attack and Release knobs seem to work wildly different than on the Standard and it felt more "squished" overall, even on the lowest Ratio settings. In that case, the Dry blend knob helped but it took moving the knob to almost 50% to get it to sound natural again. I'm sure I could probably remedy this by spending more time with it but that first experience was definitely not what I was expecting.

And if it matters to anyone: mine is a "B-stock" model due to a small scratch on the enclosure. While I doubt anyone would even notice, it is reflected in the serial number. I'm sure this probably hurts the resale value but he does not seem to mind.

Sounds like youre really into your big box. I'd keep it if you're doubting.
    Coughdrops and PseudoSpaceman like this.
  3. I like the small footprint of the newer models. I thought at first glance you would trade against the Compact Bass Cali- in this case I would have opted for the trade, for the HPF alone. But in this case, I don't know.

Yeah, that's pretty much the vibe I'm getting. After watching some guitar demos on YouTube, I seem to prefer the sound of the Standard over the newer Compact versions. Haven't seen a good bass comparison yet though.

The large format Cali's are generally selling 'used' for a premium since they are no longer being manufactured.
