Camping

I'm going camping this weekend for the first time in a while. :hyper: I'm psyched! I used to camp a lot, but haven't in many years.

I'm planning on camping a lot this year, so I'm investing in some gear. What do you avid campers use for gear?
First purchase is a sleeping bag. I've been doing a lot of research and comparison. I've decided to go with a synthetic bag instaed of down. I don't want to have to worry about ruining an expensive down bag if it gets wet. So, I've decided on this one:

seems to be one of the best priced synthetic bags out there. It's almost identical to the North Face Cat's Meow bag in terms of specs.

Next will be a good 3 person tent, but there's so many to choose from. i want to keep it under $250. Any suggestions?

EUREKA TIMBERLINE 4-MAN! Get the two door version. Amazing tent. Old school, a bit heavy, but virtually indestructable and roomy.

CAMPMOR and SIERRA are DEADLY to your wallet, believe me!!!!!! REI has an online outlet that's pretty good, too. Sierra has great deals on all kinds of stuff including really high end clothing at untouchable prices. Suits, shirts, accessories, and outdoor stuff. Lots of very high end stuff there, check out the bicycle section. I've gotten some very good motorcycle gear there, also.

If you're ever in Paramus, New Jersey, I highly recommend visiting Campmor's retail store. It's like going to Bass NW or something. They have EVERYTHING.

For ultra-light backpacking www.backpacking.net has good discussion group and links to good bargains. Link Removed is a more freewheeling discussion group with some pictures and organized journeys and stuff.

Well, I had my first mountain backpacking/camping trip of the season this past weekend in Waterton Lakes National Park. Here are some photos:

I did go this past weekend. I took the family to Greenbriar State Park in western Maryland. Nothing serious just an excuse to relax. I fed the family pretty good. I took a few pics but I have no idea how to post them.
I am thinking about planning a canoe camping trip. My gear is more suited for pulling out of the back of my truck and setting it up. I don't have much in the way of lightweight backpacking gear so I might have to look into some new stuff.:D Is there such thing a camping GAS?
I remember when I first started camping I didn't have much. Now I think I have too much and I take too much with me when I go. I think I need to go back to basics.

For me it depends what season I'm going in. In the spring/summer/fall I use a Sierra Designs Orion AST (3-season) that I picked up about 3 years ago. It's reasonable light and has plenty of room for two people with a good amount of space for gear under the vestibule. I have an Asolo Silva 0 °C synthetic bag that weighs less than 1 kg that I take in the summer. In the fall I have an MEC hybrid -20 °C bag that has an outer fill of Hyperloft synthetic insulation and an inner fill of down. It's a very warm bag and is a little more robust than a down bag but also a little heavier (about 300 grams heavier than the equivalent down bag). For sleeping pads, I really like thermorest pads. They're heavier than a closed-cell pad, but I like the added comfort. I'd rather carry an extra 500 grams than sleep on an ultralight closed-cell pad that is, IMO, very uncomfortable.

I could go into all the other gear, but that would take way to much space. Stoves, cookwear, backpacks, rainwear, footwear, etc.

What kind of camping are you doing? Car camping? Backpacking? Ultra-light backpacking? Also, where are you doing the camping? What time of year and what is the climate?

Just got back from first camping trip, it was fun. Next one is in 3 weeks or so. Horay!

Going to go to our camping spot for 4th of july and hunting and take down some damaged trees from the storm that happened when we were hunting up there last time. Few trees are no longer safe so we got to fix it before the fall down on someone. Do some maintness on our spot, prepair firewood, have a little fun and get back home. Then comes the 4th of july Oh man 11days of fun in the middle of nowhere, this is great! Love it!

Went camping this past weekend and it was awesome! We went car camping at Link Removed in Kent, CT which is an amazing park if anyone's interested.

I bought the EMS Boreal 20 degree bag and am really happy with it. It was pretty cold that night (around 42 degrees) and it kept me nice and toasty. For $99 I'm very impressed.

Looking forward to my next trip...and my next gear purchase. Since It's pretty much only me that's into camping...I've settled on a 1 person tent. I will get a cheap 3 person for the rare occasions where my fiancee and dogs are with me. But after seeing my friend's tent, that sealed the deal. Here's what I'm getting:
http://www.msrcorp.com/tents/hubba.asp This tent is awesome! Super light weight and extremely quick/easy to set up.

Oh yea, Invalid Link Removed Is having a big sale right now. Check it out, a lot of good deals.

If you're looking for a lightweight 1 person tent, you may also want to consider these tents as well:

Great pics everybody!
I've done lots of camping in the past BC, (that's before children!) trekking through our relatively small mountains over here, and one trip to The Rockies. Lots of lovely memories....

These days (well last June) was my last camping trip - The Isle of Wight Music Festival with a suitably girly tent - not your Vango Force Ten! :)
