Can a 8 string guitar used as a bass

While an 8 string guitar theoretically plays some of the same frequencies as a bass guitar, due to the lack of scale length the fundamental frequency is much weaker. As such, it does not rumble as powerfully as a dedicated bass.

So can you sub one? Yes, in a pinch. Will it sound as good? Not by a long shot.
 
If the eight string guitar is playing the melody line while playing simple bass notes.
Yes.
But if you want a busier bassline while playing the melody line.
No.
