Can anybody help me out with this Ibanez SDGR?

My daughter came home from college and expressed interest in the bass, so I gave her my only bass (Ibanez Gio) and now I am looking for something to replace it with. I found this one on EBay and am wondering exactly what model it is and what it's worth.

The serial number is J120151142 which shows it to be a 2012...

  • It has two larger knobs and three smaller ones.
  • The bridge looks to be on the cheaper side.
  • The jack is on the edge instead of on the top.
I have asked the seller for a closeup pic of the back of the headstock, and for a picture of the back with the duct tape removed.

What is the model and what do you suppose it's worth? I'm thinking if I can get it at the opening bid, then it's worth a shot.

I presume the battery cover went missing and that holds in the battery. @pblanton, I would take a pass on this one unless it's dirt cheap and you're not paying shipping. There's no shortage of similar instruments on the market in better condition, and new ones wouldn't even set you back much more.

You can learn a lot from checking the 2012 Ibanez catalog, available on their website -

If I had to guess, you're looking at an SR250 in "Starlight Blue" under some dark lighting.

As for value? I see SR300s (slightly "higher" model, and I use that term loosely because mostly it's chrome hardware vs black. given my choice, I prefer the black hardware) selling in the used market around here in that $150 range. Brand new they could be found for $300, I generally value used at half the price of new and then we start negotiating from there based on a lot of factors. The big duct tape thing scares the Beejesus out of me. I'd want to know exactly what is under there. That's where the battery compartment is, so my guess is it is missing the battery cover and he just taped it in rather than getting a new cover. Duct tape also isn't super friendly with the finish, so based on how long it's been on there and how much time and effort (and Goof-Off) it takes me to get it cleaned up, that needs to be reflected in said price.

I say all this with the caveat that I found my SR300 locally for $80, so there's that. Make of it what you will. I'd be in the $100 range to start the conversation on that one.

If it cost me a dime more than about $220 shipped, I'd probably personally keep looking. I'm sure it's a decent bass (Ibanez is really good at cheap, playable, decent-sounding instruments), and I'm sure a new battery door could be sourced with minimal heartache, but I think you can find a better buy elsewhere unless it's extra-cheap.

As a longtime Ibanez player, this one's a pass for me as well. You can get a brand new GSR for the "buy it now" price on this one. You can get a used SR500 for about $150 more and probably have a main player for years. Unless you're looking for the absolute minimum of financial commitment, that's what I'd do.

That looks very similar to an SR250 that I started out on. I agree that it looks like one - I bought mine for $300 new from GC because I was a total noob and didn't know better. Depending on your budget though, I would look out for an Ibanez SR800 - Japanese-made with very good P/J pickups. Usually go for around $400 in excellent condition (check Reverb).

Not sure if that fits your budget but I would give it a look! :thumbsup:

I agree with the SR300.
Newer model as the earlier one had a tone stack on the bottom bridge end, that never lasted long. Always replacing them.
They sell for roughly $300 Second hand here in Western Australia when in good condition
Easy necks, not a bad sound to be had with them.
