Can anyone here play YYZ note for note?

I decided YYZ was a write of passgae for a rock player and thought I'm gonna learn this mother. It took a while but I got it. However I do legato those solo fills, so I guess I can 'half' play it note for note, if I was an amputee I would be able to

Some other Rush stuff that's challenging (for me) is the beginning of "Anthem," "Analog Kid," the runs on "Digital Man," and some of the stuff on Power Windows.

Original - Yes.
Stu Hamm / Working Man - Pretty much, but use my hands (slapop/chording) differently than his.

If you want to learn Rush, get the Working Man tribute album (Mike Portnoy, James Murphy, Stu Hamm, Sheehan God, others) and practice along to those. If you can get anywhere close to what they do, you can pull off the original no problem

I love playing Analog Kid (my original bass teacher taught me that one) and Digital Man. I also love playing Bytor and lately, Circumstances.

As far as YYZ goes...look up the Show of Hands version with Geddy on the Wal...terrific...terrific

Ps yesterday I listened to a tune for the first time that I've heard mentioned in 'bass'circles as being hard - JOE FRAZER by Bruford, Jeff Berlin on bass.

Blown away.

Now anyone who could play that note for note would REALLY impress me!

Well, I can play it note for note. And (most people don't believe it) it was the second song I learned to play with the bass ; the first one was La Villa Strangiato (although I didn't nail that jazzy bass solo at first, I took some months do be able to do it.)
But I was already familiar with stringed instruments cuz I had this nylon guitar that I used for fingerstyle. Then my parents bought me Ged's sig Jazz Bass (I love it) and I customized it for me. Removed the frets with a nail cutter (Yup, a fingernail one), removed the pickguard and voilà: there's my bass. so I herd the song a thousand times while playing along to it and checking tabs at ultimate-guitar, so I learned it just like that, on a fretless bass.

Note: I'm 15. Got that song when I was 14

Oh YEAH! That is one song I never get tired of.

Played it in high school mid 80s during battle of the bands and some clubs...sometimes I'd get it dean on, sometimes I'd miss it (the little solo fills...usually the last one). The keyboard middle 8 bit I just played as bar chords. Also tried to do La Villa as a graduation challenge to the other grades with two classmates of mine, but ran out of time that night so it had to be canned.

Can't play it anymore though......I think the hardest thing was realizing that Geddy Lee picks up and down with his fingers, so he can be faster than picking just down...floppier strings help I suppose...

Trivia (in case no one knew): YYZ is the airport call letters for Toronto.

Back in the early 80's my prog cover band could nail YYZ. It took me awhile but I got the bass part down by ear. While I can play it pretty much how Geddy does, there is NO way I could ever write something like that. Those guys have always had a knack for writing rocking tunes that were complex and intricate while being accessible. I'm still in awe of the whole band especially of Geddy.

Personally I never learned the whole song ... the tabs and sheet music that I have found were inaccurate ...

I find I can play Rush stuff faster and cleaner using a pick.

It is not that difficult and it's a really cool part:

I've heard some bassists trying to play a triplet on the second beat of the second measure (hence an all-triplets measure), but Geddy clearly plays a full quarter note there. Play it exactly as notated on the tablature staff (with hammer-ons/pull-offs for the slurred notes, of course) and you'll have lots of fun with it.
