Can I connect my studio monitors with these cables?

Hi, I'm getting into recording and mixing my own music and I just bought some Powered Monitors (Yamaha HS50Ms). And I'm wondering what cables I need to connect to my Saffire Pro 14 Audio Interface. I did some google research and found a thread that said it was best to use short instrument cables when connecting to your interface.

Is that true?

Not quite ... you need 1/4" TRS ... instrument cables are 1/4" TS. You might get away with TS, but the cable is more susceptible to RF noise. TRS cables are shielded, and allow for longer runs without noise.

If you need to buy cables anyway, get TRS. They won't cost much more. You could go with the XLR cable you mention, but I prefer 1/4" TRS in the studio, since most recording gear uses TRS input/output. Here's what you want ... Invalid Link Removed ... I prefer metal connectors over the plastic molded connectors even though they cost a couple bucks more.

Yeah, I've made lots of cables over the years. I pretty much use metal plug housings these days. I bought a fair number of the plastic housing plugs from Radio Shack some decades ago and many of them have been damaged by inadvertently being stepped on and cracked. Of course, it's best not to step on cables, but accidents happen. The metal plugs don't break.

You can use TS cables without issue here. Focusrite says the outputs work fine with unbalanced cables, and you can just about always unbalance balanced TRS inputs with TS cables. OTOH, the signal will be 6dB hotter if you use TRS cables, and protected from what little common mode noise you might expect on a line level signal.

For the optimal operation the balanced XLR to TRS cable would be my choice. This balanced lines will reduce any chance for noise, and you'll get good performance from the Yamaha monitors. Sure you can use the 1/4 cables no harm no foul.

Fully agree, this would be the best solution. And just buy a good quality ordinary one, don't buy into cable-myth. This would be sufficient and is under 10,-:
