CaN I GeT SoMe AdViCe PlEaSe

Hey Steve and everyone

I've been reading a lot on the site and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and frustrated. i been playing bass for about 8 months and I've learned all the easy stuff on bass by that i mean beginner riffs by bassists in bands. (Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush, led zeppelin, black Sabbath ect..) I only know how to read tabs and i been using guitar pro to help me learn. I wanna learn some really challenging solos on bass but i don't know any i been searching youtube and google for months and theres none that catch my eye that have tabs. I also dont understand how scales and all that works, i know what they are but i dont know what there for or how to use them.
I watched that one bass solo on this forum section and i was really impressed id like my bass to sound somewhat like that but i don't know how. is it the settings on the amp or the type of strings or the bass itself. It seems like everyone on the site and every other bassist knows something that i don't. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong and just need some direction on what to do next. Everyone on this site seems to be a pro and i haven't come across any bass newblets like myself and i feel a little bit out of place posting this little rant but i just need some advice cause when it comes down to it i really just don't know what Im doing and it would be greatly appreciate if i could get some advice or even a link to somewhere that could help me.

Thanks

well... when im not working 10 hours a day at Steak N Shake... but still, its all just practice and experimenting with it to get it right...

I'm sorry. Past employee myself.

As far as amp settings, you'll almost have to sit and play with them until you get the sound you want. Keep in mind that when you adjust one aspect, it will change other things you already set. I'd suggest finding a setting you like, and take a picture of it or write down the settings. Then, trying something different. Repeat. Then you've got different settings you can reference back to. Hope that helps.

Get yourself a teacher...

+10 If you are at the end of your game working this out on your own (and it sounds like you've pretty much exhausted the 'free' beginners routes) get a couple of lessons. See how it goes.

Get a bass orientated theory book (the teacher will help you with advice on this) to really understand what scales/chords/modes etc are and how to use them.

Then get ready to spend the rest of your life learning that theory and how and when to employ it to produce something with (as Bruce Lee said) 'emotional content'.

Enjoy the journey, remember, 'to move a mountain you must first pick up a pebble', and that sounds about where you're at, which is about right after 8 months on your own :)

Enjoy!

Yes, as has been said many times. get a bass teacher, a good one. Learn theory too.

Know that this will take a while. It has taken me fourteen years to get to where I'm at, and I have realized that there's so very much I still have to learn!

IMO it isn't reasonable to expect oneself to play good solos after only a few months of playing an instrument. (At least, not unless you're already proficient at another instrument.)

As has been said: enjoy the learning.
