can no longer edit postings I created

Must be time based. Edit is an option on this posting for example but not on one I made yesterday.
yeah happened several months back, you can only edit for so many hours after the original post. I kind of understand the reason, but I do find it inconvenient when I can't go back and fix mistakes or provide update pointers. But infinite editing allows miscreants to try to "cover their tracks", and can ruin the continuity of a thread. Not sure if there's a better solution. It is what it is.
If you find a legitimate mistake in a post that you would like corrected, you can always use the 'Report' feature to report your post and request the change by a moderator.
Note, this option is not to be abused to correct minor typos, edit the gist of your comment, or perhaps because you changed your mind and don't want what you said out there for the world to read.
In the construction world we have an expression, 'measure twice, cut once'. The same principle applies here. Type your thoughts, read them, maybe even read them out loud, then when you are sure of what you want the world to see, click/tap the 'Post Reply' button.

why is it that important that we not be able to edit postings a day later? I mean, it's not like these are court documents...
I can see the point in limiting access in the classified section where someone could change an ad to reduce the footprint of misrepresentation but otherwise i'm not really sure of the value...
That's a legit question. We have had situations where folks have abused the edit tool. Creating a 'revisionist history' at times in threads has happened. Folks editing out parts of conversations that then make the conversation look much different than it originally was. Then the thread turns into some odd conversation that if you didn't know and have the original copies of the conversation, you may wonder what the thunder is going on.
It's not always for malicious reasons. Maybe someone later decides they don't want their newbie questions or comments part of TalkBass, and they would go back and edit or delete the comments. That too devalues the forums. Perhaps someone is applying for a job and knows the potential employer or co-workers will look them up online, and now they are afraid some silly comments they made will be revealed so they go in and edit those comments to make them look better. This isn't right, or fair to others either.
It was not an easy decision to make, and it took us some time and lengthy conversations to come to the decision that was made. I don't think there is a perfect answer for how to handle it, but that is the one forum administration decided on.
We understand mistakes happen, which is why we will usually make edits at a members request for legit reasons like clarifying factual data, fixing mistyped model number/brand/etc.

i would suggest that not wanting an employer to see silly comments you have made is more important than a forum thread looking confusing. Most folks have said things out of anger or frustration that may not want to persist forever. Seems that disallowing that is performing more of a disservice than having a thread on a guitar forum that doesn't look right...
You can't take back or edit anything you've said out loud or done in real life. This is about being a responsible person with what you say and do while online or in real life. Allowing people to create an existence online that is favorable for them is not fair to the other people they interact with.

I said some things in some old old OT threads that I would be embarrassed to admit to today, and I am thankful no one digs them up to throw in my face now. I own those comments, and will deal with any consequences that may come from my actions back then. Even I as a moderator, with the power to create a 'revisionist history' of my existence here at Talkbass, have refused to do so. Why? It's not right and it's not fair to those who I interact with here.

I totally disagree. The world of guitar forums is for entertainment. Unless someone does or says something illegal or threatens someone, I don't understand what point there is in punishing them for life because of some guitar forum rule just because some moderator wants to prove a point...
That's fine to disagree. Perhaps another viewpoint would be beneficial as not everyone sees this forum or others as entertainment.
No one is being punished.
Trust me my friend, the TalkBass moderators and administrators are not trying to make a point. Everyone here abides by the same edit window.
I think looking at this from another viewpoint, maybe after a break from this conversation, will help you to see the other side of this conversation.
We can continue to have this discussion, but it's not going to end with letting everyone edit any of their posts whenever they want.

I couldn’t agree with the TB edit policy more! Knowing that editing/deleting comments becomes difficult after a while has kept me from posting many (drunken?) comments over the years that I know I would’ve regretted later. For every post I actually post, I’ve probably deleted five that, upon reflection, I wouldn’t want on my “permanent record”
