Can overtuning a string break a truss rod?

I have...significant paranoia when it comes to truss rods.
I was tuning up a new Epiphone EB-0 and overtightened the E string all the way to A (I wasn't paying close enough attention, i had something on my mind) and i heard a pop/cracking noise.
The logical part of my brain is telling me that it was something sliding into place because of the increased tension, but then the panicky part of my brain is telling me the truss rod broke.
The other strings weren't tuned up to pitch but still had a bit of tension on them, and i looked around to see any cracks on body/nut and noticed nothing. Is it safe for me to assume overtuning like this can't break a truss rod?
 
Yeah, probably ok. You could always check the truss rod functioning by turning 1/4 one way, then 1/4 the other, then back to where you started, verifying that the neck relief response as expected (tight flatter, looser more bow).

As the others have said, it's unlikely that you broke the truss rod itself. But you may have cracked the wood around the truss rod. The rod may have pushed some wood out of the way too hard and caused an internal crack, moving the rod within the neck. Probably no real damage. But check to see if the relief has increased a significant amount and/or the truss rod nut is now loose.

I started doing adjustments to make sure it was moving the relief as bholder suggested and it definitely wasn't loose, and i didn't notice a significant change in relief after the initial noise. I was able to get it to bow/straighten after adjustments and it had tension either way i adjusted the rod (seemed pretty standard from my meager experience.)
I'm beginning to think that the sound i heard was just the string slipping on the machine head.

My first thought was that the neck moved in the pocket from the added pressure, like others I doubt there's any truss rod damage, I'd bet those screws in the neck pocket of an Eb-0 would strip out of the body before the truss would break, check for pocket cracks lots of Eb-0's have 'em, including mine, both sides...

I don't see any cracks anywhere around the neck joint. I think i got lucky on this one.
