can someone explain what mccartney is doing in help?

Not sure I understand your question. My band covers Help and the bass line is pretty straightforward I think. Mostly I - Vs throughout. There are a bunch of bass cover vids on YouTube that demonstrate.

Yeah MacCartney is mostly playing the Root and dropping down to the 5th of the chord below.
The only difference is the opening of the song where he is playing straight root notes. And what he does during the word "Help" is kind of different also, but I'm not sure if the opening of that is different. I used to know it but I would have to listen closely again. He plays softer at one point.
