When i was a kid i played in a Blues/Southern Rock band with my dad called Word Of Mouth (they Didn't know any better! Imagine my shame when i discovered Jaco!) it later became a Southern Rock Metal band (somehow) he still plays in to this day.
Well back when i was part of it, we had a real mountain man guitarist, a rattlesnake chewing, 6'-4" rawhyde boots on hardwood floors kind of frontman named Dennis Calhoun, well he up an bought a north carolina mountain one day and split.
One of the things he left behind was his signature home build effect, a Talk box.
Not one of those wimpy Framtonesque (huh, spellcheck says Framtonesque is a word!) lightweight Heil jobs, but a 50 watt Music Man amp running to a massive driver mounted under a mic stand, which he then bit a hole out of and attached a half inch copper pipe that went in your mouth, then into a SM57 which was then plugged into ANOTHER MM amp wired to a marshal half stack.
Anyone that has tried a Heil with a bass knows its too thin to do anything, IMO its too thin for guitar, but that monster was so loud and deep, you controlled the sound no just with your mouth, but with your lungs and stomach! Crazy sound pushed out of it.
Sometimes this setup would have the polarity wrong, or something wasnt grounded, sparks would shoot between his teeth and the show would go on. Pretty rock and roll. Ge had hands so rough (carpenter) that he would use them like a violin bow on his guitar, Chuga-Chuga-like sandpaper rough, never heard anyone else make a sound like that from a guitar. His hands were like a surfers foot.
I came across a pic of the original prototype of "The Bag", Kustom's talk box, that was to be worn around like a purse apparently. They didnt catch on...even with the fringe.
Maybe because they used a teeny little driver like Heil did too.
So this driver looks exactly Like the one Dennis made, Any Idea what it is?
I have failed in recreating this.
Also, what is that huge capacitor?
