Those are covers over the output transistors that are mounted onto those heatsinks. Looks perfectly fine, to me.Looks like someone hacked away at the back to either vent heat or for easier access to repairs.

Those amps aren't bad at all.
The speaker cabinets they paired them with was usually a two fifteen in a weird horn fold with the same rat fur covering. They would usually blow out. Whatever speakers they used didn't seem to hold the power.
I like those amps. Matt Patton from The Drive by Truckers uses one through an old Kustom tuck n roll. Sounds fine to me.

I've been fortunate enough to hear it without PA with the full band. It works fine.Looks like he's got an SVT-DI on top of the head, might be what you're hearing.A very fine sounding box there.
