I can hear the difference between copper and steel pipes, copper has a warmer, darker tone whilst steel has a brighter and more modern sound.

A long time ago, I worked for a company based in Minneapolis, but worked here where I live in western Washington. We’d get a bit of snow and everything would shut down, and the Minneapolis folks would laugh at us. I did a business trip back there in January once, outside temp -19F. Totally different snow than we get in Washington. Told a local guy about it, and I described our snow as ‘like a slushy’. He said “Oh yeah, we get that once or twice a year—everything shuts down then. “I can hear relative air temperature and humidity.
Cooler, drier air makes noises sound more "staccato".
Also, the sound of footsteps on snow is temperature dependent. I can hear the difference between snow crunching in 40⁰, 20⁰, 0⁰, and -20⁰ degrees Fahrenheit.
I've been outside in -40⁰F temperature before and every sound is clear and bold and immediate. It's eerie.

I find that most people don't know about this, but I think musicians are better-suited to be able to hear the difference in sound from cold to room-temp to hot water coming out of the faucet or shower head.Cold water has more of a hiss sound, and hot has more of a shussh sound. Kind of a parlor trick, but I thought it was fun.
Taught to me as a kid years ago--when installing natural gas line to a water heater or furnace, you can purge the air by listening to the whistle from the pipe--when it changes tone, the gas has reached the end and you can light the pilot or whatever.
Nowadays, I just listen when waiting for the shower to get hot before jumping in.![]()
I’m just going to suggest here that the reason for the change in sound.
