Can you play Sir Duke?

Ten years ago, you had to be able to play it to get a gig around here. When I just tried to remember how it goes, draw a complete blank and ended up with something that mixed-up Spain, Sir Duke, Teentown and Popeye the Sailor Man. (sign) Oh well, it'll comeback.

MTR - I'm not interested in making any recordings to prove anything. I do record my own music, and should I choose to post any of my current workings (when they're complete), you'll hear my playing then.

If you're looking for proof that theory knowledge pays off, well, maybe you should be the proof yourself ;)

To settle this once and for all I've seen moley play live and he sucks. His band are all sh1t heads and stink of poo.

Actually that's a total lie. I saw his covers band play a set a few months back. They are all very solid players and performers - a great band. And moley is no exception - on keys at least!

I must admit that's atricky line to make swing like it should. I'm gonna have to learn it and I know it's gonna be a tough one! I'll get there.

...and I think you're underestimated the amount talented people out there!

In the general scheme of things I'm mediocre bass player and I KNOW it.
I'm good in my "league" - well, other musicians frequently tell me so, but there are much much much MUCH better players out there - and many on TalkBass from the examples I've heard.

If you wanna check out my playing, download the track "Bidgie Reef - Bidgiefication" from the page in my signeture.
Live recording, one take and I'd been with the band about 2 months and had 3 full band rehearsals to learn a dozen songs or so when this was recorded.
It's far from perfect, but it's the best I could do at the moment and I'm proud of it... but I also know there's so far to go!!! A good outlook me thinks :)

In fact, I've always gotten the impression that you do know your theory, John, but for some reason I never see you partake in theory discussions ;)

I'd never hear this song before, but after reading this thread, I decided to learn it! I basically have it all down (minus the tons of variations near the end) as well as the Unison riff. I don't play it as smoothly as Mock Turtle, in fact it's probably quite sloppy, but all the notes are there and I'm still practicing until I get it down. I've been playing bass for exactly 2 years and 10 days... I'm definitely not in the top 5% of bass players, haha. Crazy song! I'll record... uhh... tomorrow I guess, it's past midnight.

for the first clip I had my Hohner B2A (in passive mode, middle humbucker selected) plugged into a mic input on a Tascam 414 4track, with the aux send on the channel going to the line-in on the soundcard (Soundblaster live).

the second was the same but with a Zoom 506 between a P bass and the mic input of the Tascam for distortion.


the trouble with plugging a passive bass into a mic input (either on a 4track/mic preamp or on a soundcard) is that you lose some high end due to impedance mismatching (passive pickups having high impedance, mics having low impedance)-
having a multi-effect unit in bypass as a buffer in between can help,
but the ideal method that I intend to use in future is using a DI box to go into the line-in on the soundcard.
- I'm thinking of getting the Sansamp Bass Driver DI.

Best post of the thread and it seems to have gone by unnoticed.

Personally, I do play this tune with my band, and it goes over quite well. Big ears man, big ears. I love Stevie, and I love Watts. We also play Master Blaster, I Wish, Superstition, Higher Ground. All great lines. The Jamerson influence is quite apparent.

As for Moley, I know I haven't been around much, be moley has always been extremely helpful and considerate. I may be wrong, but all those accusing him of anything else are probably due for an apology.

Uh, well to get back to the 'Sir Duke' part of this thread...
I've never heard this before I read the thread, but when I did illegally download and listen to it I thought that only like the top 2% of bassists would be able to handle that (the one harmony part or whatever). But then I read the notation and goofed around w/ the song for like ten minutes and I've pretty much got it. Not at the same level of Mr. Mock Turtle, mind you, but it's ok. Point being that it is quite an awesome line, but stuff like this isn't that hard to work out if you put your mind to it and actually think about it instead of being blown away and thinking it's too hard.
Now to be able to write a part like that, that puts you in the top 5% of musicians period IMO.
