Ditto, I've found he does ths kind of thing on at least one other board too.

You can only be talking about GearSlutz, where I posted the audio test of the cheap vs. expensive preamp. In that thread I encountered the same emotional reaction I've encountered here. I calmly presented the audio clips, allowed people to vote, and 75% chose the cheap preamp as sounding better.

Then when I revealed the truth the meltdown began. :p

Apparently you have brethren on that board as well who also cannot tolerate even the questioning of "accepted" conventional wisdoms.

People can be so ridiculous. Dan goes out of his way to record an a/b different options on different basses, and some of us attack him. if you don't like what he is doing or believe he is faking it well, stop clicking on his threads and keep to the ones that keep you positive. Where do you guys find time to criticize people for doing something out of their own good will. I usually keep to myself on this board but man I just had to say something, cause it's not right.

Many of my critics have posted reasons why these audio tests are, in their opinion, flawed. It seems there are very specific rules that must be followed in order to actually hear variations in wood tone.

In the interest of consolidation, I thought it would be helpful to gather all these rules/requirements in one place. The following requirements were presented by various tonewood proponents, in various places throughout my threads. (These are not my words, they were stated by others. I am not attacking nor mocking these statements. I simply present them for others to draw their own conclusions.)

You can only hear variations in wood tone:

  1. If you solo the bridge pickup
  2. If you have 2 pickups on your bass
  3. If you have 1 pickup on your bass
  4. If you don't use a compressor
  5. If you use a high-end expensive preamp
  6. If you use a low-mass bridge
  7. If you are listening to the bass through an amp in a live stage setting
  8. If you are listening to the bass recorded direct, in a controlled studio environment
  9. If you have a machine play the bass parts to remove any variation between takes
  10. If you use drastically different tonal woods, such as Maple vs. Mahogany
  11. If you use expensive pickups
  12. If you listen to the raw WAV file vs. an MP3 file (like you would download from iTunes or Amazon)
  13. If you record the samples using several bodies of each wood type, not just 1
  14. If you use roundwound strings
  15. If you have years of experience as a professional luthier
  16. If you don't apply any EQ to your bass signal
  17. If you don't have defective hearing
  18. If you're playing a jazz part
  19. If you are listening to the bass by itself (solo)
  20. If the recording process is conducted using "scientific" methods
  21. ADDED: If you don't have a "sufficient number of samples" (mongo2)

If I missed anything, please let me know.

You missed one of the most important and that is that your so called test doesn't use a sufficient number of samples to be meaningful.
 
You may have missed the one where sombody mentioned recording in the day vs night time. Sun placement is important. You know, this is all so sad. It was a simple test to show how strings sound with different woods. Too much time picking the test apart and none finding any positive. If people were this choosy picking wives, cars, and elected officials...........who knows.

Perhaps not so simple or the three necks with rosewood fingerboards from the same manufacturer I tried the other day on the same body using the same strings wouldn't have sounded so different.

The same happened with the 4 necks with integral maple fingerboards I tried on the same body.

Not only that there was considerable tonal crossover between the necks with rosewood and maple fingerboards.
