Many of my critics have posted reasons why these audio tests are, in their opinion, flawed. It seems there are very specific rules that must be followed in order to actually hear variations in wood tone.
In the interest of consolidation, I thought it would be helpful to gather all these rules/requirements in one place. The following requirements were presented by various tonewood proponents, in various places throughout my threads. (These are not my words, they were stated by others. I am not attacking nor mocking these statements. I simply present them for others to draw their own conclusions.)
You can only hear variations in wood tone:
- If you solo the bridge pickup
- If you have 2 pickups on your bass
- If you have 1 pickup on your bass
- If you don't use a compressor
- If you use a high-end expensive preamp
- If you use a low-mass bridge
- If you are listening to the bass through an amp in a live stage setting
- If you are listening to the bass recorded direct, in a controlled studio environment
- If you have a machine play the bass parts to remove any variation between takes
- If you use drastically different tonal woods, such as Maple vs. Mahogany
- If you use expensive pickups
- If you listen to the raw WAV file vs. an MP3 file (like you would download from iTunes or Amazon)
- If you record the samples using several bodies of each wood type, not just 1
- If you use roundwound strings
- If you have years of experience as a professional luthier
- If you don't apply any EQ to your bass signal
- If you don't have defective hearing
- If you're playing a jazz part
- If you are listening to the bass by itself (solo)
- If the recording process is conducted using "scientific" methods
