Can You Tell The Difference??? MAPLE vs. ROSEWOOD

I love this stuff.................man.........Read, Research, go test a bunch of basses, play them, enjoy them, make music, and for @#$$% sake don't worry so much. I played a Lull Pbass a while back in a store and it spoke to me like no other bass, I wish I could have bought it right then.............apparently someone bought it, but then returned it because of a small nick in the neck........Lull replaced the neck with an Identical but the buyer bought something different..........I played the bass again and was totally disappointed..........so what was it?? Who knows..........if you need to geek out on stuff to justify expensive equipment then do so, but why jump on folks who think otherwise? Too many variables exist for someone to care about Maple vs. Rosewood............I can turn my Treble knob less than 1 degree and get more difference..........so if you have a bass with no knobs, an amp with only volume, and never play with a different approach, wood might matter

Thanks Dan for posting these, and the ones on gearslutz. The haters are defending a point of view that you aren't actually attacking: you're just recording and posting stuff.


I heard a difference. A sounded brighter than B
No idea which is which, but I liked B.

Mixed live or with a band, it probably wouldn't make a hair of difference IMHO.

I was once asked to spot the difference between two species of ladybird*. Same shades and hues, size, number of legs... one of them had a tiny spot on it's head which marked it as a different species. My reaction... great, yeah, when do we hit the bar?

My thanks to the OP - his test showed that maple and rosewood are, indeed, ladybirds. So similar as to be unable to spot the difference without some posters self-proclaimed superior ears.

It's all down to a matter of taste and, in that, visual rather than audible.

Perhaps not so simple or the three necks with rosewood fingerboards from the same manufacturer I tried the other day on the same body using the same strings wouldn't have sounded so different.

The same happened with the 4 necks with integral maple fingerboards I tried on the same body.

Not only that there was considerable tonal crossover between the necks with rosewood and maple fingerboards.

So again, you present more evidence that wood matters... But not in any predictable way.

You can only be talking about GearSlutz, where I posted the audio test of the cheap vs. expensive preamp. In that thread I encountered the same emotional reaction I've encountered here. I calmly presented the audio clips, allowed people to vote, and 75% chose the cheap preamp as sounding better.

Then when I revealed the truth the meltdown began.

Apparently you have brethren on that board as well who also cannot tolerate even the questioning of "accepted" conventional wisdoms.

I try to fix people who are in need, and try to battle ignorance where it exists. Sometimes the depth of the ignorance AND the arrogance are just too much.

Moderators, I thought we had to keep religion out of this? This is VERY insulting...not to mention unbelievably arrogant.

Wow...won't be looking at THEIR basses ever again. Just make them out of MDF, with a fibreglass neck and put wood-coloured decals on them if wood doesn't matter.

Fender did some of that for a while...ask them how that worked out.
