Can't slap only pop....

I can pop just fine, but when I go to slap it sounds dead. No sound comes but a big thud when playing root and octave. I try not ot lift my right hand off the bass and use my wrist to pop and slap, but I can't seem to get it to slap....

Hope that makes sense.....

there are a ton of threads similar to this, so please do a search, but...

aside from rigid fingers whilst popping, you want your hand like rubber- very loose. it sounds like your popping technique is fine. thumping (like a ton of stuff) is 99% about timing. hit the string with your thumb and immediately pull it away. try this on an open string. i often play dead strings, so thats not your problem.

if that didnt help, search here, and search youtube. good luck.

Thanks, but it' not helping. I do try to "strum" it a little when I pop it and it gets a tone, but when I straight pop it sounds dead. It's not popping off of the frets properly. What am I doing wrong?

just keep your entire hand loose, and let the power come from you twisting your forearm. keep your hand lined up with your wrist and forearm and that is pretty much the technique. As for accuracy...that is just going to have to come over time. Practicing slapping all the strings, even up to G although that strings is usually slapped in solo riffs. Just go slow at first and speed it up as you get better. good luck man, slap and pop became my favorite bass style for a reason!
