Well, I've been "hangin around" music for quite some time now, always more or less self-thaught (which means, I'm learning now stuff that I probably could and should 've learned in the first year of picking up an instrument 17 years ago)
I've quickly discovered bass (I guess I should thank the usual Flea but also Geezer Butler, he was a HUGE inspiration since the start. The emotion of learning Children of the Sea it's still with me)) and started with a cheap red yamaha, then from there I took some lessons and I practiced songs at home (first with tabs, then more by ear, never really learned how to properly read music yet...the rhythm-side yes (duration of notes, pauses, etc) , but the actual notes are on the list of my things to learn how to read eheh).
I remember learning stuff from Nirvana, Bob Marley, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, (the usual stuff for somebody who was 17 in 2005) + some Opeth songs in my fully metal head days.
I had the chance to jam a couple of times with friends back in the day, I was 22 years old or such, but none of us was serious for real about it I guess.
This brought me accidentally on drums, because we needed somebody to play the drum kit in the reharsal garage room we were in eheh
I seriously loved it and felt awesome at being able to keep a decent basic beat for the others to play something on it.
I started taking drums lessons etc, but well, to cut it short "life went a different way", I had to move, changed city, country even.
Started paying more attention to programming electronic music, messed around with it for quite some time, digging the sounds-shaping aspect of it, and playing around with ideas (so easy to find a million ideas with synths..!! ), never really composing anything that I can call "complete", though.
In those years, from my 24 to my 30, my focus has been more into my job (another self thaught matter, drawing and concept art, which is now what I do for a living).
Well, so now I'm 33 and I wanna pick up the bass again and learn theory and finally give it some "solidity".
I wanna be able to move on chords progressions without much problem, I wanna be able to improvise on an established bass line without feeling like I need to be in any "box" on the neck, and I wanna jam with people and have some fun without big goals aside from learning and feeling it!
These are my plans for this year and the next!
Gonna start checking for jam-mates in autumn, let's see how it goes.
I'm definitely more into playing soul, classic rock, blues, jamming around these kinds of sounds, experimenting a bit maybe also, but I'm definitely less of a metal guy nowadays (actually, the most metal thing I listen to nowadays is Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio stuff, Black Sabbath...sometimes Tool...I'm one of those who appreciated a lot in the end the turn to classical rock from Opeth, and nowadays I listen more to Sorceress than Blackwater Park. It's as if they carried me with them along the way ahahah)
I thought that, maybe, a good idea could be to finally go get some piano lessons, a way to go through music theory with a teacher, on the best possible tool to understand it, and this way expanding my scope of music understanding.
And , maybe in this way, also meeting some like-minded people that want to do something like I do.
I'm fairly new to the "playing together" thing (if done with intent and purpose I mean), and I'm a bit shaky at the idea, but I wanna do it : )
