Capo use during setup?

I bought a Kyser 12 string capo... plenty of tension for a bass setup, and plenty wide as well... I use it for both 4 (1.5", at nut) and 5 string setups (1.75", at nut).

I have a kyser as well, it works great, but I also already had it for my 6 string (guitar.) They run about $20. I looked online and there are seriously capos for $2. If it's only purpose was set ups, I'd roll the dice and try a $2 capo.

Maybe someone can chime in that's tried one...

Without something to hold a string down at one end, at least, it is difficult to hold the string at the first and last fret and slip a feeler gauge under the 7th. If you can do all that, please let us know how you grew the third arm. Oh yes, and the ever popular pics or it didn’t happen!

How wide is the fretting pad on that? My Emerald 12 Bass Baritone is 2&1/2" at the 7th fret, any chance it's wide enough? Haven't found the specs on their site yet.

I just ballpark it by eye, then flatten the neck out 'til it starts to buzz on the 1st 5 frets - then add relief 'til it doesn't buzz there... It usually ends up between .010"-.015" that way, and gives me the best action each individual neck is capable of for my playing style/technique...

You can use a straightedge that spans from the first fret to where the neck meets the body. If you use a capo, it doesn't need to be wide enough to reach all the way across the neck. Anything that will hold a string down against the first fret is good enough.

@bholder, if no one else chimes in, I can get the measurement for you, later.

I sent them an email, @10:48... they may not be in, today, but let's see how good their customer support is. IIRC, I contacted them regarding the capo, and they were awesome!

So I should be focused on holding down the E string only or just holding down one string at a time as I go across the fretboard?

Yeah, that’s why I am interested in the elastic capos... inexpensive! Its only purpose would be to serve for setups.
