Car Help! Side Mirrors

Hey all,

I wanted to adjust my mirrors to eliminate the blind spot. This involves making it so there is no overlap in your side and rear view mirrors. I've found that with my 96 accord's manual adjustment mirrors, I have almost no adjustability. The adjustment from the inside only moves the mirror down and out or up and in, and in almost useless style. There is so much overlap in the mirrors, side and rear, that it's ridiculous.

Is there something I'm missing? Is there another way to adjust them, or something I need to do?

I can't help you with you mirror problem, but I just wanted to mention that I've driven with my mirrors set up this way for the last 5 years, and it works great. I would recommend it to everyone.

If your mirrors only allow adjustment out/down or in/up, chances are your mechanism for controlling them is either broken, or the small cables have come off the guides. Mine did that on one of my old cars, and I replaced the whole assembly. I used PartsTrain dot com as my source, they were way cheaper than the dealer, by about two-thirds. It was easy to do, took less than an hour start to finish, and looked fine. Check them out if you think you need to replace the mirrors, they're pretty cheap. Then go check the dealer price, just don't eat anything immediately beforehand...;)

The mirrors are not power, they are controlled by a small lever that extends into the car. The lever doesn't really allow me to move it out far enough, ie., if I move the lever so the mirror's view moves outward, away from seeing the side of my car, it also moves up, almost to the point where it's useless. If I try to move it back down, it concurrently moves inward as well, giving me a completely useless view of the side of my car, just about the last thing I'd want to see while changing lanes.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I actually already have a pair of wedge convex mirrors. They work decently, but to be honest the size of the image in them is so small that it's a little disconcerting.

I just went out to the car and fidgeted with the windows some more. I manually, with my fingers, pushed the mirrors outwards and got them (at least the passengers side) into decent position. The right one is still a little low when it's out far enough to clear viewing my rear driver side door. I'll continue working on it, as it seems I'm getting close, but it still won't stay up far enough.

In the meantime, if anyone else has suggestions besides blind spot mirrors and replacing the mirror, please let me know.

There is no way to completely eliminate the blind spot on any car ever made, and there is one such spot on each side of the car. Curved mirrors definitely help, and so does setting the mirrors just wide enough that you can't quite see the side of the car in them, but they can't completely eliminate the blind spot.

Look over your shoulder before changing lanes. Every time. No exceptions. Ever. I'm serious.

Problem solved.

I don't mean to sound rude, but I know that already. There's no replacement for looking over your shoulder to be sure. That said, there is also no replacement for being able to see as much, and get as much information as possible, without diverting your attention away from what's going on in front of you.

I wasn't asking for the safest way to change lanes, so my problem isn't solved. Thanks for your condescending post though, that certainly helped.

If anyone has any info the mechanical problem with my mirror, or any fixes, I'd be more than willing to help.

I apologize if that was rude or short, but this is the third thread response saying that, and I already specified that that wasn't the answer I was looking for.
