Car sub box as external cab?

If I got a budget 12" car sub box and put an Eminence or Celestion bass guitar driver in it, would it sound ok as an external cab?

I used to jam at a guys house years ago who did that exact thing. The cab was built for 2 15" subs. He put in 2 15" bass speakers. It was not horrible ... but it was not a good bass cabinet.

You can sometimes get an empty bass cab from ebay.
