For me, it's Meguiar's #2 polish to get out swirl and bring up the shine, and Meguiar's #3 carnauba wax for normal use.

A guitar would have to be pretty bad off for me to use any kind of cleaner on it, beyond maybe lemon oil on a fretboard, or vegetable oil to remove sticker residue.

Polyurethane clear coats on modern instruments are almost the same as the poly coats on new cars. Shine away but be very careful with rubbing compounds.

Q: How should I clean or polish my guitar?

A: Most store-bought guitar and automotive polishes will work fine on the glossy areas of our UV-finished guitars built after 1995. Our factory technicians recommend and use Turtle Wax Express Shine® to clean and detail the entire body and the back of the neck on all Taylor models. Express Shine works well on both glossy and satin finishes, and older finishes. You may also simply use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the surfaces and follow quickly with a clean, dry cloth. To clean the fingerboard, we use and recommend 0000 extra-fine steel wool. Simply rub the steel wool up and down the length of the fingerboard right over the tops of the frets. This will remove any grime from the fingerboard without damaging the wood and will also remove any oxidation from the frets, giving them a nice shine. Do not use furniture polishes on any of our guitars at any time, as they will likely damage the finish.

Seems car wax should work fine.

Plexus plastic cleaner is the best stuff I have ever used. Not easy to find. It adds real depth to the finish that you have to see to believe. Sorry, it is not a tone enhancer.

I've been using Super Hard Shell paste. I almost went with spray last time I got some wax, but decided on paste since I'd used it for so long with no problems. I'll have to pick me up a bottle and give it whirl.

Rickenbacker recommend using Turtle Wax on their finishes - been using it myself and results are great.

I would not use any sort of rubbing compound or cleaner wax (Zymol, Nufinish) with any sort of regularity on a nitro finish. These all have very fine abrasives in them that remove surface scratches. Sooner or later you will rub through the finish.

You can get Plexus from almost any motorcycle dealer. I bought 2 cans yesterday for about $50 bucks (thanks for the gift card honey!). I keep one in my shed and one in my saddle bag to clean my windshield. It works like a charm.

Gonna try it on my guitars now!

I use furniture polish to spruce up my instruments, but have used McGuire's car polish for heavy polishing like removing light scratches.

I use mothers carnuba wax on a Fender and Rick - works great. I tried mothers carnuba cleaner wax, but that is more difficult to remove and leaves a film. I would be careful of what you use on nitro finishes, it will dissolve under a variety of solvents.

Ever use Guitar polish on your car? Or shoe polish on your silverware? Might be a good idea to use a polish specifically created for the job at hand.
