Carvin Basses?

I totally agree about the soaps, I really dig'em. I've had mine for a couple of days now, and I'm pretty impressed. You really can't beat the price, especially when buying used. The materials used is top notch, such as a foil copper shielding of the control cavity, and metal inserts for the retaining screws of the cavity cover. You usually see these being done on higher end boutique basses.

I would agree that the stock pickups on a carvin (excluding the icon's soapbars which I haven't heard) do have a mediocre tone to them. I have a carvin 5 neck-thru I bought used for $800 with bartolini's (J/ Hum) and for the money, I'm really happy with it. The neck is fast, it was set-up by the store before they shipped it over two years ago and the neck is still very straight. Stays in tune very well, it's tight, focused and I get pretty good growl with the barts. I saw a used 6 string neck thru for $400 from a reputable store the other day, but it was sold before I could call about it.

I have to say the MM pickups that Carvin builds are outstanding (IMHO). My LB7W has one MM pickup which sounds great. A few months ago I played a LB76W at the local Carvin Dealer that had 2 MM Pickups with 2 Coil Splitting Switches and a Piezzo Bridge pickup. That bass was (again to me) the best most versatile bass I've ever played. There were more tonal combinations that could be gleaned out of that setup... than any other bass I've ever played, it was amazing. Unfortunately I didn't have the money to buy it... but I could have sold both of my other LB76s because the tone options made it so versatile.

And as for ease of play, the Carvin's neck and fretboard are outstanding. I graduated from 4 strings to a Carvin LB76 and have never looked back. The Necks contour and feel made that transition easy.

Agreed on the MM style pup! I bought a BB75 on ebay fully expecting to swap the pups (wanted the asymetrical wide neck). Plugged it in and SAZZAM! I wouldn't swap that pup out for the world.

I miss both of the Carvins I had. They are built very well, excellent craftmanship, great electronics, great price, and are easy to play. The first one I bought was back in 96' it was all mah 5 string with 5 piece neck...no major thrills but was built like a tank.
2 yrs later after a job promotion I bought a 5 string Claro Walnut Series, with the MM style humbucker, the first year they came out....what a nice creamy sound....GREAT...so many people wanted to just hold it.

When I traded them in, my wife stated I looked like a girl who got stood-up at a prom...I stated I did not! as I wiped my eyes...stupid...the trading game to get something different. AAARGHHH!
The only negative is the fact that do not hold their value if you ever trade them in...I learned the hard-way with no one to dance with...keep em if you get em.

got a Carvin AC-50 I really like it, use it often at gigs. It's fretless with ines cuz I didn't want to think too hard lol.
don't really know about there mag pups tho_ cuz this ones got a bridge transducer, but the Carvin Preamp is cool.

Very Light also.

I used my walnut 5 string bolt kit Carvin on a country gig two weekends ago. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it sounded with the band.( I usually use my P-bass or one of my Jazzes). I also liked the way the low B string sounded- clear, and strong with a nice thick, full bassy tone. The slide guitarist loved the tone. Also, the comfort of the neck was a bonus. I'm definitely going to use it more. I was a bit reluctant to use it because it doesn't have that traditional Fender/country look, but no one seemed to care.

I just got a new carvin two days ago. The bridge is crooked. Let me share a pic, and my experiences with carvin.

I ordered a bolt on bass from their in stock section about 1.5 years ago. It hadnt arrived after three weeks. So i called them to remind them to ship it. It turned out they never processed the order and got it to me within a week ( 4 weeks after i ordered it). It had 3fairly large chips in the neck pocket and a scratchy electronics module. I kept it because it had an extra light/resonant alder body. If it had been average sounding acoustically it would have went back.

I ordered a BX600 head and a 4x10 from them about 8 months ago. The head arrived DOA. The cabinet was sealed and it had no low end response when i tried it with my GK. I called carvins customer support and they authorized the return. The only thing about it was they made me pay for return shipping, and it was over $100. I think if a company sends a customer something that is broken, they should pay for return shipping. I should have stopped ordering from carvin after this, but i didnt, i just thought i was having bad luck.

I ordered a replacement neck from them in december for the b4 i already had. I wanted to replace the ebony board with maple. Carvins catalog advertises that necks with no special options deliver in 1 to 3 weeks. After 10 weeks of waiting, i called carvin. Their sales guys gave me the "it will ship next week" run around even after i knew they hadn't even checked on it. They also told me they would call me back on 3 seperate occasions and failed to do so every time. So after about 5 calls i end up on the phone with some girl in accounting. She tells me the neck was labeled "shipped" the day i ordered it. But there was no tracking number so it must be a mistake. Turns out the order was never processed and they had to start the neck. They rushed me one in two weeks. It arrived with out the mounting holes for the neck joint and the tuners. I had to drill them.

Since i had ordered my new b4 a week after the neck, i had no idea of the impending trouble that was about to transpire with that order (my "luck" is getting really bad), so i was still stupid enough to place an order for this bass. It arrived three weeks late. It has two cracked inlays, the bridge is crooked, and there are large gaps on both sides of the neck pocket. When i say the bridge is crooked, i mean that the string thru body holes are not lined up with the string thru holes in the base plate of the bridge. They are only half way lined up as you can see in the picture. This means that whoever strung this bass up at carvin had to force the strings through the misaligned holes. This in turn means that they knew they were sending me a defective bass, but they didnt seem to care. Also, the gaps in the neck pocket, which are very odd for a cnc carved bass, seem to be hand sanded gaps. Why would they do that? Well the crooked bridge was causing lateral tension on the strings which in turn pulled all four saddles to the right. This created an alignment issue with the neck. So the geniuses at carvin sanded the neck pocket a little bit so they could get some lateral play on the neck and mount it slightly offset in order to compensate for the alignment issues caused by the bridge. So now they are knowingly sending me a defective bass AND trying to conceal it. I contacted their tech and he authorized a return. He sent me a confusing email about the return process, so i asked him to clarify. He sent me a snoody email with select words in italics and capital letters that made him sound like he was explaining something to a 3 year old. The snyde attitude was very clear and intentional. Maybe he was irritated with their poor QC, maybe he was irritated with me for not understanding his fragmented and confusing instructions, but you shouldn't infantalize your customers. That makes them mad.

I have a sneaking suscpicion that UPS is not going to show up to pick this bass up.

I have to admit i useto really like carvin. But they have very serious quality control, customer service and imo honesty problems that need to be addressed. I am not some troll blasting a manufacturer because he got a bad part, or had a single bad experience and never even tried to contact them about it. I am a customer who has had legitimate bad experiences with a company with 4 or out 5 orders that i have placed over the past 2 years (they didnt mess up my string order). I dont think it's bad luck anymore. If it were not for the latency between orders when dealing with carvin, i would have stopped ordering from them 3 order ago.

Oh, and heres the bass. Dig that impossible to miss f'ed up bridge mount job. The bass is actually very very nice. The ash is very resonant, and the frets are PERFECTLY done. This is the first bass i have ever bought that legitimately has no high or low frets at all. If it were only the cracked inlays and neck pocket gaps, i would keep this beauty. But every time i do pull offs on the g string it comes off the board due to the alignment issues. it also doesnt want to intonate exactly. Yes carvin does make great basses, but sometimes you have to buy with caution.

That plain sucks. If I had those experiences I would never deal with Carvin again. Shame too because that's a nice looking bass.

I've never had these sorts of problems with Carvin but then again I haven't bought anything from them in the last 2 years.

How can you guys say Carvins sound dull?! Have you bothered to try the new electronics?

There are SO many tones. Coil tapping, 3-bands, sweepable mids, and the piezos (with a blend for the magnetic pickups and blend for the magnetic and piezo signals), it is so versatile with SO many full O' life tones.

I've owned six different Carvins from the AC40 to an LB76, some new, some used. The build quality on come of the basses was less than perfect, but not bad. Some of the basses - like the LB75A that I will always regret getting rid of - were of comparable build quality to any high end bass I've ever played (Modulus, Pedulla, Zon, Lakland, etc.)

If you buy new and aren't satisfied, send the MF back and make them fix it. Remember - the customer is always right. Just don't be a pushy a$$ about it.

I think carvin uses some of the best sounding wood you will find with any manufacturer. It is consistnently light and resonant. And the UV cured poly seems to add a reflective/focused acoustic quality to the tone. I just think the people that work there can be mega jerks sometimes.

In my experience their customer service has always been good. I purchased 4 basses and 2 amps from them and was pleased.

It is cool having a Carvin store in Sacramento and I love going there to play the new models they get in. But the stock strings they put on are REALLY weak.

I have a B5, and it sounds terrific. The action is nice, the neck nice and flat, and I can get a variety of nice usable tones with the HB2 bridge pickup and H50S neck pickup combo. It has the 9V active electronics with a single/dual coil switch. I love the bass and wouldn't trade it for anything. The low B string is my favorite. It rings out loud and clear and actually is a natural extension down from the other strings (in terms of feel and sound). The B string is very taught and not floppy like other 5 strings. It sounds best with a 1x15 combo, but that's just my opinion.
