If you think finding one is tough, I think finding a tech to service it (especially in the U.K.) will be even tougher, and finding some parts might end up being impossible.
But if he gets it for cheap and it lasts 4 hours, he's totally hosed.
OP, if you tell us what your goals are for the bass head, intended use, tone preferences, etc. we could probably suggest at least several bass heads in current production with warranty that might fit your budget. Check these out, for example--plenty of selection at good prices:

I like mine a lot, but I can't say it's built like a tank, cuz it isn't. Great eq, lots of power and light, though.
Just looking for a decent sound bud.
Heard one of these when abroad recently and it sounded like what I've been looking for .
I play through an ashdown mag 300 and have never been happy with it .

There's no doubt the BX500 is a great sounding and powerful head. With everything set flat (straight up) it's very clear, which turns some people off, but once you dig into that versatile EQ section the magic happens.
We are just warning you that Carvin has washed its self from all their amps even if it is only two years old, so getting service or parts even in the US, heck even in the State they were made in is pretty much impossible.
Shops won't touch them.

If you want a fat bottomed girl, check out a used Genz Benz. Still serviced. Just post what you find so we can verify.
I bought a Carvin bass combo 5 or 600 watts, in 2008 or 9 maybe, look sort of like the picture. Got it took it out of the box look cool,. But i had a gig that night and took it at that time i used an USA Fender P bass. But the amp quit in the middle of the gig, I had to play thru the PA head. My lead guitarist also repairs amps open it up and look, that upset Carvin but i had another gig in 2 days and could not afford to wait. What my friend found what he called cold solder joints, so he resolder them and I sold it . Carvin would not take it back, so i purchase a new MarkBass Jeff Berlin 151p which I still have and still use. I like Carvins guitars and basses, but don't trust their amps, and thats just me I guess.

This is good to know. I got mine for not much money as they were selling off before they ditched the amp line. I suppose when it breaks I'll have to consider whether to have it fixed or not. I already had one GK MB200 go bad, and it wasn't worth having it fixed.
Yours could be a great amp, I own one of their tube guitar amps for along time it was great, I sold it to my nephew and now I play Rivera Clubster Royale 50 watt tube amp. But like I say I could have just got that one you know. Yours may last for years.
My Carvin BX1200 kicks absolute ass. I will put it up against any head, especially when driving two powerful cabs. It's the last of the Solid State heads they made though.
