Carvin BX500: Part II

Oh, I'm sure they wouldn't rip into finished product -- they would most likely put a 4-ohm spk into an amp they haven't finished yet.
Boy, I'm pretty sure... some parts may come from overseas, but I'm pretty certain the final assembly is at their factory in California.
Well, Carvin is a factory, not a handwork shop. So anything that goes outside normal procedure has at least the potential to carry a cost in terms of extra time. Time is money. But even if there is an extra cost for what you want, it's hard to imagine that it could be very much. They might just write it off.
I'll find out this afternoon whether it'll work - I'm sure the rep ahs already emailed me back, but I can't access it here at work.
This is an interesting topic (to me).
First: I like Carvin and am happy with all my Carvin purchases, and especially the attentive service.
When I ordered my BX515 they told me that it was 4-ohm (to get all the power n the combo), since it didn't really matter to me at the time, I said OK.
I treated it as a 4-ohm and everything was OK until I blew it up, I think that I had a speaker wire short, and it went into protect mode and wouldn't come out. Carvin replaced the head with absolutelly no hesitation.
While the heads were being exchanged, I removed the speaker to look at it, and it was very clearly an 8-ohm model, per the label. I then posted a question in this thread about how to determine the ohms for a cabinet. I checked it out and the cabinet came in consistent with and 8-ohm cabinet.
I called Carvin to try and reconcile what I had been told with the facts as I saw them. The sales guy insisted it was 4-ohms and the tech guy said it was definitely 8-ohm. In any case, I'd make sure that you get what you want when it's delivered.
Another note. They advertise the BX515 as weighing 40 lbs. It's actually 52 lbs., but still light by my assessment.

Can anybody else verify this? 52 lbs is pretty light for a combo, but there's a big difference between the 40 lbs they list it as and the 52 lbs he says it really is.
May have something to do with the difference between a (lighter) Neo and a standard speaker. The ones with the Neo speakers have model numbers ending in "N".
Mine is neo, I just don't take care when I refer to it. lol
It's a Brx515N with the titanium HiFreq driver and the triangle reflex port on the front right bottom corner.
Too make sure that I had it right on the weight, I just weighed it again, without any of the external cables, on a calibrated balance beam scale.
BRX515N = 50.25 lbs. Again, it felt light when I picked it up to move it to the scale (up 3 flights of stairs, no problem).

I didn't mean to doubt that you weighed it - I was just wondering if this was what people consistently found. Maybe yours was a fluke.
I would personally rather have the BR510N but I need a lighter amp - 40 lbs is better than 48 lbs for me because of my back, but if it's really 50 lbs I'm going to have to reconsider.
Same exact thing here. It is just over 50 pounds. The handles make it so easy to move though and it is very light for its size.

Why would they list it as 40 lbs then? It seems dishonest. I would expect more from Carvin.

Good point. This is a downfall of Carvin IMO. Great products but just enough goofy mistakes to create some distrust in the marketplace. I guess that leads to lost sales (and better prices for the rest of us ha ha).
I don't think that they are being dishonest intentionally, since I understand that the Carvin family is pretty much against that (IMO).
I would chalk it up to benign neglect in the catalog.

Good catch! I think I'll go with the BR510N, then since it's 50 lbs. I'll see if they can put two 8-ohm 10's in there so it's a 4-ohm load. The BR515N would sound deeper, though, huh?
How does the BR510N take the low B?
