Carvin BX500: Pt. 3

According to some TBers it's always better to buy new cabs and heads rather than ever move any knobs or sliders... If they were in charge of running PA much, that could get pretty expensive, make soundchecks last for days, and require a hella lot of storage space ; }

???

I have seen folks state that "if you have to eq the stuffing out of your rig, you might want to think about what you bought..." but buy new gear rather than EQ it??

Ok Tlr here are my setting i took 2 pics one flash one non flash and thanx for your replies. :)
Interesting... if I used that much treble on the graphic eq with my MTD, dogs around my neighborhood would howl. :p Just goes to show how versatile the BX500 is. If your bass has a lot of inherent highs and harsh pickups like my stock Heir 5 has, you can easily get it under control with the graphic eq.

I can't wait to hear what the BX500 sounds like when I upgrade to Barts.

Yea it kinda does Chef lol That's what makes EQ fun but my current settings gives me the tone i love that super punchy tone but i do control my volume. I play a Cirrus 5 redwood so imagine when i want to get down on finger style i my move the blend back just a bit on the bridge pick up. When i want to get funky and get slap happy lol i put the blend on defualt and cut a little bass off that's basicly what i do when playing gigs i get complements all the time for my tone. The problem is the way my church is build it's weird i can play in other places just fine and cut through and always being ask to turn it down lol. But when i play in my church i get lost in the mix it's weird. At the moment with my funds and being married i'm not the only one lol. This poorman's rig is all i can afford Bigoldharry that's why i was thinking of adding an avatar sb112. Guys once again you been alot of help you guys are amazing. Please i'm open to more replies.

If it works, it's good. Sometimes EQ newbies do things a little odd though; better results yet are often available by mixing more cutting with the boosting.

Anyway, some heads and preamps have a ton of HIDDEN EQ/voicing, and with them before you even move a front panel knob or slider you may be EQ'd up the wazzoo.

Myself, I prefer to have little or no HIDDEN voicing and have the choice available instead to me, on the front panel.

Well - first use the 'Hot Pre-wash Option' - THAT is a mix cutter for sure. ;)

I gonna have to try these settings with a 410 this weekend. Maybe I can do some tweaking and have some fun with the tones.

First glance and I think it may get a bit boomy, but I'll give it a try - gonna be fun - thanks.

Read those link on EQ - tons of good info and even some tried and true do's and dont's.

Hey TB i have a question i'm a proud owner of a Carvin BX-500 with an Avatar B410 Great thread . Basicly when playing a slow set in church my bass sounds great. But when things go crazy and were playing a uptempo number i feel like my cab is not cutting through the mix sometimes sounds muddy when i past half way on my volume. Everything is so loud i get over powered by the band. I was thinking of maybe adding an avatar sb112 for more low end and volume and maybe cutting more in the mix. but i don't know if it's my amp that's the problem or maybe the church. Avatars are known for being super loud. Can anyone help me out on this one? thanks also i don't own another amp.

Id get a fEarfull 15/6/1 ............and stand back.

OK - no expert here, but...

I feel this is a bit low-heavy and just translates into some 'mud in the mix'. No doubt this feels like it carries a heavy-a$$ low-end and my walls rattle big time with these settings, but there is no real bite to speak of. No real 'cut'. These settings will certainly kick you in the chest and has a really nice reggae feel to it.

I'll catch a pic and post my settings soon - not that they rule or even cut like you may want, but so far they seem to support my BDDI and VT Bass settings well for a modern and Ampeg'sh tone. Maybe you can try and see if you like and tweak from there. They are a bit low-mid heavy because I like a bit of bark and thump, with just a tad bit of clarity.

Bass, pedal board, amp then cab.

Bass
Gibson Tbird w/aftermarket Chinese pickups (actually sound good)

Pedals
Into a Daphon 2-band preamp volume maxed, bass and treble both at noon....into a Fender Flanger pedal (always on and all knobs at 9am).

Amp
Active switch, Tube Drive at noon, Bass at 2pm, Contour at 3pm, Low Mid volume at 3pm....mid sweep depends on room but generally around 2:30pm, High Mid flat, Treble at 2pm. Graphic eq is engaged but all sliders are flat (haven't really messed with them yet). Haven't gone above 9:30am on the volume knob.....generally keep it at 9am.

Cab
Going into an 8ohm Avatar DeltaLF 2X12" cab so I'm only pulling 300watts from the carvin but it's a LOUD 300 watts.

The trick (imho) is sweeping the low mids to the room for warmth.

I think the carvin kinda sits in between GK and the HartkeLH series as far as warmth goes.....maybe leans a little more toward the GK side but you can still it fairly warm.

Wow - these really ate me up in the 350-500 range - could really hear those low-mids, but with clarity, no growl.

This amp can growl a bit. She's no GK or Ampeg, but can have an attitude if you give her the right settings.

From what I can tell - engaging the EQ switch with the EQ sliders all notched at 0 (flat) does nothing. Engage and disengage in that position and I hear no diff at all. BUT... it is a great place to start with the EQ. Since you found some settings sans EQ that you like, adding in some EQ should be slight and don't be afraid to experiment with cutting in place of boost - so many tonal possibilities in this little beast.
I'll post a pic of my own so you can give it a try. Not my end-all-beat-all, but just another idea to toy with and have fun.

I hear you man it may seems my current settings like it might sound super low end reaggea tone but it don't to me it's all how you eq your bass as well and also your playing style it's in the fingers this is just my IMO no offence. But yea man please do take pics i love messing around with different settings. i'm open for any settings you have.

No man - not trying to offend for certain.
Bass is passive P/J and VVT all wide open; finger-style.
I couldn't play a pick to save my life (um... maybe not so much finger-style either, but I have a great ear ;))
Next post should have the settings and bass pics in.
I do love your settings for reggae - you must believe me - I have been looking for great reggae settings, could not figure them out, but yours... I stealin' dude! :)

Nice looking bass my first bass ever was a SX jazz 5 great bass for the buck. Currently playing a cirrus 5 redwood il post pics tomm. My settings does sound sick when playing muted. but i have dail the bass knob back to +3 is it does not rattle like crazy before. I mostly play alot of latin jazz, salsa,r&b, and sometime gospel. I love that punchy tone i get out of my cirrus. I will try your settings. Nice case by the way. What cab are you using?

Gotcha....yeah I'm going to try experimenting tonight during rehearsal with the sliders and see what happens. The settings I'm using definitely are "95% there for me" so I'll see what boosting or cutting on the sliders does.

Does anyone run this thing regularly at 2 ohms? I have a 4ohm 4x10 cab and would like to add an additional 2x10, but my current amp won't go to 2 ohms.

Also it seemed that there were some reliability issues with these early on. Have they addressed that?
