I've heard a lot about this head.

I've heard it also isn't right for "rock" music, I'm not sure what that means but I guess it applies to me as I play in a death metal band and some rock bands.

Can anyone elaborate?

And can anyone share their experiences with them.

I wholeheartedly disagree that it’s not right for rock music. People are just used to making minor adjustments with all the knobs set flat and they consider that “the tone” of the amp. The BX500 is a very transparent amp when set flat, meaning it’s clear and sounds like your bass. It’s not colored when set flat like many other amps. You can set it flat and use the DRIVE and graphic EQ to get your tone, or you can get your tone with the semi-parametric EQ and use the graphic for making minor adjustments to compensate for the room’s acoustics.
The Carvin allows you to target and boost (or cut) very specific frequencies so it’s very versatile (any sound you want) but it’s not a simple amp. There’s a bit of a learning curve compared to some other amps. Once you got it though you’ll realize the design is quite practical.

Fantastic. This was the exact response I was looking for.
I've been debating and contemplating whether to get the BX500 or an Ampeg SVT.
I'm going to go Carvin, purely because I like them, my pockets aren't that deep (I care for about 50 reptiles + study) and I like something different.

Just some extra information, I'll be using it on a Ampeg B-410HE with a Shector 6 string, my style consist of slap, tapping, sweeping and chords.

Please anyone else, feel free to add more!

Interesting - I'm headed to Carvin at noon to try this amp out as a back up to my SVT. Besides the incredible price for these amps right now, the other selling point for me is the versatility. We'll see - I'm hoping it works out becasue i can't get over the price.

Quite the coincidence! Looking forward to your findings. I really like targeting the low-mids with my Carvin's.
