Hi, second time poster here and have appreciated all the education and experience from talkbass.com.
Anyways, I regularly gig with a Carvin full stack in larger venues like loud bars, outdoor festivals, etc. And have been satisfied with the 7 years of using the 4x10 8ohm 1000w Carvin Cab until recently when I noticed a distorted sound. Particularly at high volumes, with a strong attack, and with the horn volume up, the distorted/popping sound was loudest. It almost sounded like a blown speaker, but my gut told me it sounded like the horn.
I began using a different cab with my usual Carvin R600 Red Eye Amp Head and this 1x15 cab sounded great with the Red Eye, no distorted sound or buzzing.
In order to troubleshoot for the problem, I took apart the 4x10 cab and removed the horn (the distortion suspect). Being an optimist, I hoped that by simply replacing the horn with a carvin replacement with the exact same specs, the problem would go away. Unfortunately I received my new horn today and installed it with the same troubles, so my suspicions were wrong. Using the little bit of speaker and wiring knowledge that I have, I am now making the assumption that there is a problem with either the circuit board where the wires attach and the amp plus in, or simply the wiring (let's pray).
I have an odometer (not that I'm real good at using it) so any help from those with first hand or electrical experience would be appreciated and Keep Rockin Bassists!
