CARVIN MS215M---Farty Party

So the title suggests, I have an old Carvin MS215M cab, and I'd like to upgrade the speakers. I understand there's a WORLD of thought put into doing so, but I am a humble simpleton.

In short, the cab is super bright, and when pushed, it'll get a little farty. So, I'd like to up the power handling and try to "darken" the sound a bit. It's ported, and I'm pretty sure it's lined inside. I'm only using an Orange LBT, so I don't need a TON of power handling, just more than those old drivers can take.

I don't have exact measurements, and there is ZERO info to help with that online.

I don't care for Neo speakers, and I'm hoping (as most do) to keep the budget low. So far, I have no leads, but any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The drivers in the photo are not their entry level drivers, I would sure want to know what’s in there first, before assuming anything else. They look like they may be Delta Pro drivers, which are voiced more like the EVM-15L.

Those drivers are probably fine (if they haven’t been damaged), they can last over 50 years without any issues.

Where are the time control settings on your amp?

Is your bass active, and if so, what onboard eq does it have?

It’s unlikely that the “farty” sound is the drivers. It’s almost certainly from your amp.

This is what I'm working with. Passive P with an MM.

I have an SWR Henry and I think I may still like that better. Just figured I'd branch out to see what's out there.

Turn down the bass eq as well. You have it just about dimed! That could be causing the farting.

Most likely. It's a shallow cab, so I'm trying to compensate. I may just still with the Henry.

If you want help with that cab, you'll have to take it apart. Pics of drivers/model tags, measurements, and port dimensions if applicable.

I bought an empty Carvin cabinet just like that brand new in 1982 and loaded it with 2 EV 15" speakers. I still use it and it sounds great.

Some people have been known to put jbl E140s, or Electrovoice EV 15s in as a replacement. Much like richland123's cab.

The EVs were actually an optional upgrade from the factory.

As I recall, the Henry was a pretty tight cab as far as bass response in itself and they often seemed to have blown speakers from people trying to pump bass into them they couldn't really handle. I'd probably aim to try to dial in some low-midrange instead, as suspect that is most of the punch you are hearing from the Henry.

I was gonna suggest an hpf or buy a new amp with an hpf.

This is what my bass rig looks like. I usually run an Acoustic b600h head. The 1975 Music Man One Thirty head in the photo is my back up head.

Carvin DID offer JBL K-140's (or E-140's) as an option in the late 1970's and early 1980's
